A news article from globalnews.ca that reads "CAUT strongly recommends that academic staff travel to the U.S. only if essential and necessary," the warning reads. The organization said that academics who fall into certain categories should "exercise particular caution." Those categories include citizens or residents of a cuntry identified as likely to be subject toa. travel ban, those from a country that has diplomatic tensions with the U.S. (the rest of the sentence is highlighted) people who expressed negative opinions about the Trump administration or its policies, and those whose research could be seen as "at odds" with the current U.S. government.

I feel like I only post negative things on here, but it's also what's always on my mind lately. Academics here in Canada are being told to limit our travel to the US. I've highlighted the authoritarian bits because it's just in there like it's normal, so it can be kind of easy to miss.

It feels so unreal! Dr visit? Free. No copay even

I wonder how many trips to the doctor and the pharmacy it will take here in Toronto before I don't have an anxiety reaction to checking in and waiting to hear how much it's going to cost. Average monthly med costs after health insurance in the US: ~$500. In Canada: $4.

And of course now that the assignment is graded, it won't allow me to change the grading scheme to something else that might work correctly.

Three lines in a grade book. Two lines show an assignment with a grade of a Pass and a score of 0. One line shows an assignment with a grade of Fail and a score of 100.

I get that Learning/Course Management Systems are hard to design. But eClass truly is a class of it's own.

In 2022, every public university in GA got a request from a Georgia House representative via our Board of Regents asking for lists of info about folks who touch DEI. I found the document again yesterday and I forgot how McCarthyist it was. This is just a small snippet. #whyilefttheusa

It's like someone created a chaotic evil executive order generator with the emotional intelligence of a 3 year old (and that's insulting the 3 year old) and with insecurity levels topping the national-level insecurity felt in the US during the Great Depression.

I've been busy with the move and starting my new job and getting set up in a new country, so I haven't really had a chance to ask before this, but it's been something I've been wondering for a while:

What the ever living fuck is happening in the US???

There's probably a German word for those moments when you suddenly snap into reality and realize you're moving to a new country next week.

Whatever it is, I'm having a lot of those moments lately.

Thank you! Feel free to message if you have any follow-up questions. As always, there's never enough room for everything in an article! :)

Yay! The article I worked on with @anasalter.bsky.social about using crafting metaphors into our gaming classes has been published today in @maifeminism.bsky.social! The special issue is full of amazing articles, and is well worth a look!
