I'm still reviewing the manuscript and I can only give one advice: If you intend to publish an extremely flawed study and the topic is my research speciality, I recommend to exclude me as a reviewer. Otherwise I will recommend that this extremely flawed study will be rejected.

I‘m late in reviewing a paper, so now I can enjoy the sunny 🌞 but rather fresh weather in Bremen and read on the @marumunibremen.bsky.social balcony.
My favorite action is to remind colleagues organizing events that they have to be precise about the time zone and that we have daylight saving time at the moment. 🕰️
Dark Oxygen? What is it and why is it important? Join us on Thursday 21 May 2026 from 13:00-14:00 CEST to find out! Our May #ThirdThursdayScience session will discuss dark oxygen with speaker Andrew Sweetman from @samsocean.bsky.social. More and register here: www.marineboard.eu/events/dark-...
When you start a conversation in the family Whatsapp group with 'as you all know, I will be at sea this autumn', at least one person will respond 'ups, no, I had no idea you will be at sea' 🌊 🤔. At that moment, I hadn't mentioned yet, that I will actually be at sea for 2 months. 🤷♀️
Just to let everybody know, an ERC Starting Grant is not an inexhaustible source of funding 💶, especially not for paid internships that were not/ never included in the original budget calculations. 🤷♀️
A friend of mine with a PhD in bioengineering and me are discussing whose job is tougher, my one as a newbee #PI with an #ERCStG (struggling with university admin) or his being a science teacher who has to deal with a class full of teenagers in puberty. I think his one is tougher.
If you don't know what to do on 29th April and you're in Northern Germany 🇩🇪, you may want to visit the art museum in Wolfsburg, see the new exhibition by Julian Charrière (www.kunstmuseum.de/en/exhibitio...) and listen to my talk about #DeepSeaMining: www.kunstmuseum.de/2026/04/volk...
I invent new scientific terms in German 😂. I am writing the job advertisement for the PostDoc position in my #ERC Starting grant group and university regulations require a German advertisement (an English advertisement is optional). So, I just 'Germanize' a couple of English terms 🤷♀️.
Now, manuscript 2 (first author) was accepted by @frontiersin.bsky.social and it's therefore the 1st paper with my group's name on it. 💪 It was a great @uugeo.bsky.social (my second affiliation), @niozsearesearch.bsky.social and @marumunibremen.bsky.social collaboration. #NewPI, @erc.europa.eu
Since I established my #ERCStG research group "Benthic Ecological Biogeochemistry" at @marumunibremen.bsky.social on February 1, 2026, I contributed to 3 manuscripts that were submitted. 1) shared-first authorship, 2) first author, 3) last author. 1/n
Hence, when I heard that MSc student in Germany don't do science, I had to dig them up. Just to let you know, I have 2 more datasets from my MSc thesis in 🇩🇰 waiting to be published. 3/3
The campaign wasn't part of any course or my MSc thesis, I just wanted to do fieldwork in Greenland, so I designed a scientific experiment. As I switched topics for my PhD (from polar science to deep-sea benthic ecology), the processed data were never completely published. 2/n
This photo was taken 13 years ago by Lars Chresten Lund-Hansen, when I was a MSc student at @au.dk 🇩🇰 and I joined a field campaign to Greenland to study photodegradation of DOM in sea ice 🧊. I heard about the field campaign while participating in a research cruise to the Central Arctic Ocean. 1/n
A tipp when you want to trigger me to return to a long forgotten dataset and get it published: make sure you agitate me a lot. I'm constantly moving papers/ datasets up and down the priority list, but if you want a paper to escape this elevator, make sure I'm very furious 😡😤. Now: Greenland 2013❄️
Besides accepting goods for my colleagues, I also do something fun today and test my new equipment.
As a #ERCStG doesn't secure you a permanent position anymore 😵💫, I might have found a new job in case I don't get a tenured position in science. I establish the incoming goods department, since I'm already fulfilling this position anyway by having my office in the foyer & starting to work ~7:15h. 📦
What's the April weather 🌦️version in the scientific review process? Receiving the following recommendations to the editor: Reviewer 1 - major revisions, Reviewer 2 - rejection, Reviewer 3 - minor revisions. Let's hope the editor is satisfied with all our revisions and accepts the manuscript 🤞🤔.
To cite a friend, „my office looks like a lab or a workshop“ because my new set of ex-situ incubation chambers arrived at @marumunibremen.bsky.social earlier this morning. After the last O2 optodes have arrived, I can start with the first incubation experiments of my #ERCStG project #Spycling.
I am always very grateful when reviewers take the time to review my manuscript in detail and provide constructive critique. However, n = 6 is not a low number of replicates in marine ecology, it is rather at the higher end 🤔.
I co-supervised Sophia with my great colleague Dr. Lingli Zhou, Assistant Professor in Energy Critical Metals at #EarthSciences Department at @vuamsterdam.bsky.social.
I'm very proud 😁 that my former MSc student Sophia E Artz @vuamsterdam.bsky.social submitted her report as scientific manuscript to #OreGeologyReviews. It's her first paper & it's my first last author paper as #ERC group leader of 'Benthic Ecological Biogeochemistry' at @marumunibremen.bsky.social.
When your PhD student cancels the weekly meeting on a short notice and you think, great, I have more time for my own research, what you actual do is admin. In my case, trying to fill in the time sheets for HorizonEurope in the correct manner 🤔.
As part of my #ERCStG #SPYCLING (funded by @erc.europa.eu ) I'm purchasing equipment (lab and field incubation chambers, O2 optodes, GC/EA-IRMS) and the first part of my new a equipment arrived last week.
So, now I'm the proud owner of O2 optodes for lab incubations 😆.

It was eventually approved 💪.
My reality: submitting the same travel reimbursement claim over 74.96 Euro 💶 for the third time and 🤞 that it's approved now. 2/2
Here is the misconception between what the public, funding agencies, and yourself believe a scientist does: Public: research to help saving our planet 🌍; Funding agencies: ground-breaking research & next Nature/ Science paper; 1/2
Hi Rachel, no, I only attended the DOSI workshop on Friday and Saturday and returned to Bremen 🇩🇪 on Sunday. I'm sitting in my office at MARUM right now.
This month, I started my #ERCStG group 'Benthic Ecological Biogeochemistry' at @marumunibremen.bsky.social that is financed by the @erc.europa.eu via my #SPYCLING project. Now, the first preprint of the group about C+N cycling & metabolic activity of 🧽 is published: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
