it's worth noting that the quote they went out of their way to make look stupid was expressing a reasonable point — a restatement of the long-standing official US policy in fact! — and the quote they clean up and sanitize is expressing a deranged threat of war crimes in an illegal conflict

The NYT literally rewrote Trump saying “open the fuckin’ strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in hell” as:

“Mr. Trump issued a new ultimatum to Iran to end its chokehold over the Strait of Hormuz”

People don’t wanna put two and two together with what he did to usaid and him putting up those maps of global birthrates and saying white people are being replaced
