“We owe it to the women who have come forward, those who we have not heard from, and the next seven generations of women to teach them through action that they should never sacrifice themselves, accept disrespect, or be anything but powerful for the sake of the movement.”
“And we must build our organizations and movements where dignity and respect is not just a demand but a daily practice where abuse is not excused, hidden, or enabled.
“We must carry on the work of the thousands of farmworkers who walked picket lines, endured brutal working conditions, and sacrificed so that future generations could organize with dignity.
“That legacy belongs to thousands of workers, not the figureheads lifted up by history. That power was never one man’s claim.
“Since I was a young Latina organizer growing up in California, the UFW has been a symbol of courage, perseverance, and how workers can bring the powerful to the table through relentless organizing.
“As deeply shocking as this is about one man, he is not an exception. Misogyny and abuse goes unchecked from the White House to the fields and there are plenty of names on street signs and school buildings that ought to come down.
“I am rocked by the revelations about Cesar Chavez and the statements from Dolores Huerta, Ana Murguia, and Debra Rojas. May this moment of collective truthtelling be a moment of collective healing.
Statement from @neididz.bsky.social, founding Executive Director of Organized Power in Numbers:
“Toward movements where abuse is not tolerated and survivors are not expected to be silent for the sake of the cause.
The fight for DACA taught us to be brave. The Labor movement taught us solidarity. Now, we need both.
