The fact that fewer and fewer people are willing and/or able to read say 1000 words at once seems as dangerous to liberal democracy as anything else that might be happening but that is where we are
Også for ikke-italiensrejsende danskere. Fantastisk bog!

This report in Nature on the costs of competing for & administering scientific grants is shocking: "In other words, European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained." www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪

Anyhoo, here's a paper about "the centrality of housing concerns in facilitating the Holocaust and the complicity of individuals in the exclusion of Jews for economic, ideological, and geographic reasons."

With AI, we are f*cked either way.

“In a world on fire, how can we concede so much power to an exploitative technology that produces questionable results, operates in opaque ways, deepens social precarity and fuels the planetary emergency?” On academic publishers and the AI hype drb.ie/move-over-fo...
That being said, I certainly recognize the "weird vibe" that others write about. It's definitely more a place for disseminating your work and/or achievements than for scholarly debate. Although there are exceptions.
+ To my mind it doesn't hurt that you can also reach people on the research administrative, foundation, museum, media, and civil society side of things.
I think it might depend on the national context. In Danish academia it is very used (and much more so than bsky) and therefore also useful for engaging other scholars, be it in history or the humanities more broadly. It's for example proven a pretty good place for disseminating cfp's etc.
Academics in the US are increasingly under threat. Mark Bray is a great scholar who has made substantial contributions to the critical study of antifascism and fascism. Threats and intimidation cannot be accepted as the new normal.
Thinking of my former Hungarian language teacher today who was greatly upset when Dylan won the Nobel prize - not because a singer had won the prize but because Krasznahorkai hadn't.
Me and a bunch of brilliant colleagues got an op-ed responding to the recent political attacks on Roskilde University in the Danish newspaper Politiken today.

On the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima…
There are no words left for what the Israeli government and IDF are doing to Gazans.
And yet we must still keep finding the words to say it loudly: they are actively committing genocide and the our governments are letting them.

Menneskeskabt grusomhed udfoldes for vores åbne øjne. Grænserne må STRAKS åbnes for uhindret nødhjælp.
