I think my mom got cable in ‘82 or ‘83. During summers from college, I would sit for hours watching videos of bands I’d read about in Rolling Stone or Musician but had no FM airplay in St Louis and then buy their LPs or cassettes - the Jam, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello, Bowie, Talking Heads.
