I do forget how hilly that area is, but yeah you're right.

The biggest advantage of using the SCAL is that it is already there and requires the least amount of work to get going. If we got to the point of seriously considering something like this, it would make more sense to shift the link further south and have a much larger curve radius.

I think they're purposefully vauge on the CHIP website, but honestly if they built a ramp up to the SCAL, that same ramp could likely be also used for the river. The big question would moreso then be "how the fuck do we get over the orange line"

This part is mainly used for interchange between the BNSF and the NS, and if it made sense to be using part of the rockwell, they likely would tbh. UP-NS traffic on the rockwell is almost exclusively to the NS ashland yard

Ishiba is paying for a new yard, not NS to shift their mains over 10 years from now.

New Details Emerge About Justin Ishbia's 14th Street Rail Yard Acquistion New details emerged on Friday about White Sox minority owner Justin Ishbia's acquisition of Amtrak's 14th Street Yard.

The baseball stadium is going to be on the north end of the campus, the connection to the SCAL is still absolutely in play. www.soxon35th.com/new-details-...

Sure...as long as you can convince NS to go along with it without paying them a stupid amount of money.

I'm saying that the time it would probably take to get to 16th street interlocking on the rock likely would be pretty similar to the amount of time it takes to get to CP 21st street currently, and therefore would be faster as the rock wouldn't require a slowdown until BI.

My whole point with that is you would *need* to use NS trackage to go east for the rock island, but could use Metra trackage for yard access. There isnt space on the east side of the NS tracks to build an "Amtrak runner" or something for such a connection.

that wouldn't really be offered by accelerating, just to slow down again for a connection further south.

14 hours ago 1 0 1 0

Yes, but the difference being that, even with a bridge over the CN, amtrak trains would still be capped at 30mph until they hit either metra or NS. If they went via 16th (~14th pl to CP 16th and CP21st is about the same distance) theyd pretty much immediately be able to go track speed, something...

Oh yeah, root street wye has been OOS for just about 5 years now (4y10.5m to be more exact) and I wouldnt be surprised if it was officially abandoned by the CRL

The difference is there is a metra owned track (and ROW for a second) between CP 518 and 21st street that yard movements could use. The three NS tracks are essentially single track for most of the day with how often they park stuff there.

Both of these would require crawling through 21st street and traversing NS a decent bit of NS trackage (which isnt bad by itself, but can be PITA during inclement weather). Not to mention via that route, getting to CP 518 takes all of 12 minutes instead of getting to 16th and taking off.

Thats true, but sheesh this tire frels REALLY new. My guess might be someone opting for a cheaper tire and then switching for something else after not too long?

Just feeling it with my finger, the tread depth is the same, so it really couldn't have been used that long. I do wonder how used tires in good condition come to be, assuming they aren't stolen or anything

The alternative woulda been to get it towed to a regular tire shop and then get up early in the morning to show up and get it fixed, for a much higher price. I am going to want to get this swapped out with what I have on the rest of my wheels, but it'll do for now.

As much as I avoid used tire shops like the plague, I'm glad some of them stay open late. I popped my tire at ~815pm, got a tow truck to pick me up at ~930pm, and was at a tire shop by 9:50pm. 15 minutes and $78 later, I was driving out of there with a budget tired in decent condition.

Gemini has apparently been using this random Reddit user's actual phone number as a sample phone number quite a bit. I love when my predictive text algorithm doesnt know what 555 numbers are for. @edzitron.com

Someone told me it was designed by an at-the-time highschooler who is now an engineer. That being said, lightning has changed so many times its definitely not one scheme, but like 4?

1 day ago 0 0 1 0

this is the stupidest way to do a vote, you're going to have more likes by default

also they should have a "neither" option

make it a competition with outside submissions like what ended up becoming the lightning scheme

i mean, its likely all gonna be vinyl so i dont think it matters all that much, but yeah could be simpler

also i think in this case that grey color might be the steel? unsure

IIRC that was back in 2022 when they revealed two conceptual renders. I like the colorful stripes idea, but it definitely could be executed better
