Marking 400 years since the death of John Dowland, our Choir Director performs Dr Case’s Pavan.
The pavan commemorates John Case, Scholar and Fellow of St John’s, who is remembered to this day in his portrait above High Table and in his Chapel funerary monument.
These portraits, admired at the time for their fidelity, continue to sit at the centre of this discussion.
Read more about Allan Ramsay's Queen Charlotte Sophia ➡️ www.sjc.ox.ac.uk/college-life...
Since the mid-twentieth century, scholars have explored the possibility of African ancestry within Charlotte’s Portuguese royal lineage, while contemporary descriptions of her appearance remain complex and sometimes contradictory.
Dearest gentle reader... as Bridgerton returns today, all eyes turn again to Queen Charlotte 👑
The college's portraits of George III and Charlotte Sophia, gifted by the royals themselves, sit at the heart of a long-running debate: was she Britain’s first Black queen?
These texts reflect everyday book culture: affordable student copies, devotional texts and popular editions.
Such material is comparatively rare in major libraries but offers valuable insight into the social and economic history of reading.
A huge thank you to Professor Bray!
The College is delighted to have received a significant donation of Arabic-script manuscripts and early printed and lithographed books from the collection of Professor Julia Bray, Emeritus Research Fellow in Arabic.

Early morning street outside St John’s College, Oxford, with historic stone buildings lining a quiet, wet pavement. Warm streetlights glow against the dark blue sky, reflecting in puddles on the ground. A bicycle is locked to railings, and bare tree branches frame the scene.
