Little guy went for a worm... almost as big as he is.
The Frenchie... always a producer.
With Skwalas making their appearance this pattern fished near the banks was a work horse.
Not all of them fill the net. ๐ฃ

Epic day in the river. Winter seems to be fading.
Work horse of the day. This Film Critic pattern survived 4 eats before it stopped floating.

That's my boy!
The first fish on fly rod experience. The good 'ol micro midge is the go to when you need to get a fish in the net.

From sizes 16 to 24. ๐ค they bring fish to the net.
Experimenting with different materials and patterns. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't... but always love trying!

Blue bird day at the river.
Today's successful flies.
90ยฐ weather today. Thought it would be refreshing to stand in a clear cool spring river.

Couple of "net fillers" caught on soft hackle flies fished under a mini Chubby Chernobyl. The smaller bright colored trout was caught with a dry black stone fly.
The flies I put to use today. The 3 successful flies (pictured top right) soft hackle black midge, black stone dry fly and soft hackle pheasant tail nymph. Soft hackles were fished under a black/purple Mini Chubby.
Loving the warmer weather ๐

Today's river shenanigans. The fly the trout (middle left and top right) took was a Quigley's Film Critic like the one pictured bottom right.
Through the snow and graupel the trout were still rising today. C'mon warmer weather!

Thanks, me too brother!
Very similar. I see that on some you trim the bottom of the hackle. Do you find it fishes better laying flat on the water?
Foam fly copied from the YouTube channel, "DrewlooknFishy."

Another Youtube fly that caught my eye.

3rd Hole at Bend Golf Club. Par-3 139 yards from Blue Tees.
Soaking in spring sunshine. Course is looking great coming out of her winter slumber.
Thought I had grabbed the 8/0 but it was actually 16/0 that was in the wrong place on my thread rack. Only took me 3 thread breaks to figure it out.
Chubby Chernobyls and GFI Hoppers.
Batch of Chubby Chernobyls and GFI Hoppers. The Hoppers battled me all day, breaking thread, super glue messes, etc... ๐ A lot of lessons learned. C'mon summer.

I know the beetles works very well and I suspect the Madam X will too. Not sure about the extended body may flies... never fished them before.
Note: The craft store foam sheets were a little thinner than the 2mm foam I bought at a local fly shop. Will it make a difference??? First time trying detached body flies.
Tied up some foam beetles to replenish my box. Then decided to try other foam fly patterns. An outdoor sports shop did not have what I was looking for. I went to a near-by craft store and found 12"x18" sheets of foam for 99 cents a sheet. Bamm!

Recipe for the Thread Body Beatis Soft Hackle published in Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club's "Flies of the Northwest." Love working with Starling feathers.
Completed flies sizes #14 to 18. Not sure if I like the yellow thread ribbed bodies or the tinsel ribbed bodies better.
Yellow thread ribbed body fly as per the "Flies of the Northwest" recipe.
Tinsel ribbed body varient.
Still filling my box with some emerger patterns. This one, which has been successful for me, comes from Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club's "Flies of the Northwest" one of my go to books for inspiration.

View out of the window from my fly tying desk.
Beatis emergers size 22 to 18. PMD emergers size 16 and 14.
Neighborhood once the sun came out.
Snow day = fly tying day... as if I need an excuse. Knocked out some Beatis and PMD emergers, size 22 to 14.

So good to be home again. Micro Midge fills the net again! This big boy came with some extra gear I was able to free him from.

Gunnison River at the North Fork Confluence. Inset, my father-in-law getting ready for hiking and fishing.
Got my 82 year-old father-in-law to slip on some waders, lace up a pair of boots and hike/fish for about a mile up the Gunnison from the North Fork Confluence. Not a great day fish-wise (๐ฆจ) but yeah... a great day! ๐

Thanks @cosmicjohn.bsky.social . A bit far for this trip but definately a destination to plan for on future visits. Great article.
Looking for public access areas to do some walking/wading fishing. Anywhere between Montros to Delta on the Western Slope.
Staying near Delta, Colorado.
Been away from my fly tying desk. Visiting family in Colorado and jonesing to sling some flies. Never fished in Colorado, so if anyone has any suggestions for the Lower Gunnison River area I'd be happy to hear any suggestions.

Our local bachelor has found his mate... love eagle watching.
Love watching our local eagles.
Thanks @flickingfeathers.bsky.social keep posting your instructional tying videos. Love em. Got your cased caddis pupa in the box and looking forward to giving it a try.

The golf course is starting to wake up from it's winter slumber. Looking good ๐.
Young Red Tail Hawk (I think) overlooking the course.
Getting a little taste of spring here in Central Oregon ๐โโ๏ธ.
Yes, I think this will make it's way into my fly box. ๐
Yup, made it out to the Metolius. Had to shed layers today.
