It very much is. I'd like to see tool to override the default species listened for, it just doesn't pick up extralimital stuff here in southern Nova Scotia. I usually manually set the location but its a bit clumsy.

Merlin should have 'please buy a book' as a lead message even before people can use it to ID anything.

A Bit of Head Fluff I think we all hate the idea of hybrids. There’s a certain connotation about them that makes birders dismiss them as a nothing, a mistake, an error and not fit for purpose. While I tend to agree wi…

We barely got a Little Blue Heron in Nova Scotia last year, so an adult at Pubnico today was enjoyable. A bit distant, but I managed a photo. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

The Willets are back Ted! Niche joke, it helps if you've watched Father Ted. Two at Pubnico Point in Yarmouth County this morning were my earliest for Nova Scotia by four days. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

I found myself in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia again, just in time to jam in on a drake King Eider, only the second county record. Initially it was 1km or more away, but we shivered and waited and it slowly paddled our way. Taken with my new travel camera, the Nikon P1100. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

Having had time to review the head plumes, fluffy as well as plumed in photos by others) and considering comments by a Maine birder who has experience of egret hybrids, this looks like a Snowy x Little Egret.

A good Nova Scotia bird, a Little Egret that showed up in Yarmouth Harbour in southern Nova Scotia today. Drew quite a crowd, it being a county first. I counted seven birders at one point. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching #NovaScotia

Be Kind The bird of the period is undoubtedly the Townsend’s Solitaire that found Keji Seaside Adjunct and stayed there, albeit 3km from the parking lot. It was a good walk to be sure but it’s also a lovel…

Glossy Ibis dropped in this morning, Daniel's Head Cape Island NS. I usually see one a year but that's about it. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

One of my books, the seventh in the Nova Scotia Birder Mystery series and the one that introduces my latest heroine, Hannah Washington. I have in mind potentially two more books in the series before I retire it. #Books #Booksky #NovaScotia #Birderstories #Authors

A better photo of our Field Sparrow which is still around. We've had a slew of migrants in NS the past few days, none of them expected for three weeks or more, but here they are. People need to get their spring heads on, more to be found. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

Heavy rain made it pretty tough for my 200-800mm lens on an R7, but I managed a doc-shot of a very early Field Sparrow in my yard. We've had an odd pulse of arrival in the past few days, Field Sparrow is sub-rare here in Nova Scotia. #birds #Birding #Birdwatching

My wife Sandra is having a go at doing ads for me, mine tend to be one dimensional. Mirovina is the second in the Hannah Washington series, available from Amazon, just like my other 19 novels. #Books #Booksky #Novascotia #Authors Lots of birding travelogues there too. #birderwriting

A lingering adult Glaucous Gull. Always something to think that this bird might be robbing a Polar Bear kill later this year. Cape Island Nova Scotia. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching #NovaScotia

A magpie around Canso, Nova Scotia in June 2025 has just been confirmed by DNA as Black-billed, a provincial first. I got there the day it was relocated, having previously been seen by just three people. It went early next day thereby avoiding the hoards, (c15 people here!). #Birds #NovaScotia

$1.77 in rural Nova Scotia where we have no public transport and so private vehicles are essential. I've never understood why we pay more than the city.

A three km trek each way and backlit when we got there, but it's worth doing for a Townsend's Solitaire. Only my second in Nova Scotia and, as a bonus, we didn't get eaten bears. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

The players can have a direct influence by not going, especially all those who always thank their god after scoring.

Sign the Petition Nova Scotia needs clean energy, not a 300MW fossil fuel burning peaker plant in Marshdale!

This 300mw gas plant (possibly 2) will go in near me. A place I have spent much time in the wetlands and old forests. The petition is self explanatory.. please have a read, Nova Scotia can do much better. And please share on socials, time is running out. Thankyou everyone.

Kumlien's Gull from my local fish plant on Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia. Not so many of these darker winged types for me this winter, I guess they sit somewhere between Thayer's and Kumlien's. It would be interesting to track one back to the breeding grounds. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching

Just an update on our Long-eared Owl. Yesterday it fell off a perch and didn't get up. A local local birder-vet took it into care where it died, it was around two thirds the expected bodyweight, so not eating enough. The local Northern Harriers probably didn't help either. #Birds #Birding #owls

Finally got my Nova Scotia Long-eared Owl. The hardest of the resident species to see, this bird at Pubnico in Yarmouth County was the first twitchable one, ever. Species 394 and such a fabulous show-off We kept our distance, it often didn't. #Birds #Birding #Birdwatching #NovaScotia
