Mamdani Wants to Show That Democratic Socialism “Can Flourish Anywhere” The mayor is using his “100 Days” moment to talk about “the change that democratic socialism can deliver.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani says that New York City is offering an illustration of “the change that democratic socialism can deliver.”

As other cities follow NYC’s example by taxing the rich and funding social programs, Mamdani argues that it will become clear that socialism “can flourish anywhere.”

Sanders: The people have got to determine the future of what happens in our country and in the entire planet, not a handful of extraordinarily wealthy, arrogant, anti-democratic multibillionaires. That’s what they want. They have their goals. They are not our goals.

Lukas Ligeti's Notebook: CD Release Concert Celebrating the Austrian-American composer's new release, which inhabits a space between new composed music, free improvisation, and indie rock.

Playing TODAY at Roulette @roulettenyc.bsky.social with Lukas Ligeti and his project and new album "notebook" with a great group of musicians.
I like what Lukas says about this project, "it shows that music can be innovative, demanding, and fun, all at the same time"

Look at the women at NASA.

They are the ones pushing the boundaries of science, solving problems most people can’t even understand, and carrying this country forward, while our politicians right now posture and stumble through talking points.

And they are doing it all with joy.👇

This year is the 100th anniversary of other jazz greats like Miles and Coltrane. Randy was their age, even some weeks older!
And as great and relevant as them all.
Fly high Randy!

(...) as evidenced in his autobiography which I highly recommend.
I have a few of his albums and keep listening to other ones elsewhere, while also keep on the hunt for some other obscure ones… Let’s celebrate his life listening to his beautiful and powerful body of work.

Not many Americans can name different Colombian rhythms, unless if involved with the music, much less something so specific as bullerengue! Of course his father was Panamanian-Jamaican, but that lineage was nurtured through a life long fascination with the roots of music, (...)

Thanks to Pheeroan, I got to meet him backstage, it was a blessing to shake his firm and strong hand, and when he heard I am from Colombia he replied immediately “I love the music of Colombia, cumbia, bullerengue, currulao”. His lucidity and curiosity for the African diaspora was that deep!

In that last concert he expressed himself so beautifully about the spiritual value of music, how it belongs to nature, and how it helps to bring people together, how it helped him to develop brotherhood with musicians around the world particularly in Africa, and of course he played so magically.

I got to hear Randy Weston live a few times and was lucky enough to meet him just a couple of months before he passed at a concert in Jamaica Queens organized by Pheeroan akLaff. What was striking to me was how Randy projected so much energy, lucidity curiosity and youth at his then 92.

Marking the 100th birthday of jazz pianist and composer Randy Weston Weston, who died in 2018, had a 60-year recording career, during which he lived in the U.S., Morocco and France. He was influenced by Duke Ellington's regal bearing, but Weston also had his own style.

"I started to think what magical process happened when the African came in contact with a European instrument. For us to go ahead, we have to way back, and find out how our ancestors created all this music. They were greater than us. It’s an amazing story."

Using Spotify is just as bad as using X, in some aspects, even more consequential: Spotify is actively killing music, not just exploiting musicians. All other streaming platforms are better, and have as wide a choice. Migrating your playlists is dead easy. Please leave that evil platform - now.

Reminder that the estimated $1 billion per day Trump is spending on war in Iran is enough to pay for:

- Medicaid for all 16 million people losing it due to Republican budget cuts
- AND daily food stamps for all 41 million people who rely on them

This is a PRIORITIES problem.
