Wrote this piece because it seemed to me that plasticity is what's missing from the public discourse on transgenerational effects, read more here: Trauma is carried in your DNA. But science reveals a more complicated story theconversation.com/trauma-is-ca...

@taralync.bsky.social did her PhD here @monashbiol.bsky.social. She has been very open and honest about her challenges and this is a great article showcasing her achievements and struggles

For the few I have on here, I've written a very personal piece on chronic illness that explores bias and the real reasons it is so difficult to get workplace accommodations and flexibility, read it here: taralync.medium.com/trust-me-im-...
So sorry to hear it, it is definitely a struggle no matter what but I do think conditions and awareness are overall improving.
This is so insane that it beggars belief honestly. There's nothing to say those going through this, and that will be affected directly by this, other than it sucks, it is oppression, and even in countries outside of the US we support you and will fight against this.
Bleak, grim, terrible news is coming in fast these days. I'm sorry for all my academic folks in the US and others who rely on government funding and programs, as well as the many PhDs I know working for federal agencies. Destruction and chaos is the point, I know, and it extremely sucks.
Where can I scream into a void? (Is it here?) I’ve got to say, with everything going on, trying to find a job while managing my chronic illness, and trying to gauge what work I can do when I can no longer struggle through a 9-5 job, is exhausting! Add in constant medical appointments, etc. #burntout
I have basic accommodations, no visible disability (dynamic), and yet I've never had them done without having to go through months of advocating for myself until finally I get a chair or some lab modifications, multiple universities too. Always a fight, and damage done to the health in the process.
A photo of female Drosophila melanogaster seminal receptacle with GFP tagged sperm.
Why is an old male reproductively doomed to fail? Is it poor sperm and seminal fluid, or do females not like him and his ejaculate?

I have had to quit the lab entirely, at least for now, know how you feel!
Is low fecundity of old males a consequence of seminal fluid or sperm declines, or female post-mating responses? Our new paper in evolution letters finds some surprising answers!

“This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver meaningful legislative reform and leave a long-term legacy for the protection of nature."

I know, I know, I'm always the one complaining about academia. But I do have to say that if we don't change the incentive structures in academia and really change the publish or perish culture--things like this will continue to happen (not at all to justify these actions but to understand them).
Earlier this year, I received news that fake peer reviews were allegedly being submitted impersonating me and approximately six others
I shared my story with Science to, hopefully, reduce the chance of this kind of breach happening again

Thanks heaps Ros, fingers crossed for her!
My daughter @ElizaCharley.bsky.social has ME. Apheresis to filer microclots in 2022 was a game-changer. She’s been set back years with Cvd. Please consider supporting a GoFundMe for a new round of treatment. If you can’t please read the about her journey and get informed gofund.me/6f20766a
So sorry to read this story Ros, it is unfortunately very similar to my own and others I know with chronic illness, and getting covid is like being back at the beginning again. I hope she is able to get the treatment and that it helps to improve quality of life.
