Gil Duran tweet: TLDR: Fascism
in response to Palantir's long fascists screed on X.
"Your Account is Suspended" Message on X
The CEO of Palantir posted a fascist manifesto on X.
I pointed out that it was fascistโwhich resulted in a permanent suspension from X (my second time!).
So, when you hear the tweeters complaining that BlueSky is intolerant, remember why many of us came here in the first place.

Machine Yearning (4096-byte album)
YouTube video by lftkryo
Fly-by comment: I saw BBS and thought it was referring to a bulletin board system. ๐
And, another reference to classic computing for you, an 8-bit album I recently discovered shares the title of your post.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=74d_...
Oddly coincidently so I thought it was worth commenting ๐

And, in fact, I get a lot of communication via LinkedIn messages (communication that is not related to LinkedIn, i.e. that should be emails). People seem to be using it for a lot of things. But I just can't. Yesterday I sent the 10th "happy to chat -- but not by LinkedIn, please email me" ๐

Yeah.. and I logged in yesterday and it's still "thriving". A lot of people I used to see posting on X are posting there and not here. I can't bring myself to do it, though. I'm still pushing to bring all of that to Bluesky, eventually.

a man in a suit and tie is sitting on a chair
ALT: a man in a suit and tie is sitting on a chair
Matthew was damn funny. And it was cool that he brought a lot of his own personality and childhood friends into Chandler, touching millions of people who remember him fondly for years to come. โฅ๏ธ๐ฅน๐

'Ketamine Queen' sentenced to 15 years in Matthew Perry's overdose death
Jasveen Sangha was found guilty of selling drugs that killed Friends actor Matthew Perry who had struggled with addiction for years.
What happened to him was tragic and nobody should go out that way. ๐ญ It seems like he didn't really have a chance.. it was too easy for someone with his status to fall back into it.
Just last week, the main dealer responsible in his death was sentenced to 15 years. www.bbc.com/news/article...

The book ends with what is supposed to be a feel-good positive note; reflecting about the future during another (undoubtedly temporary) period of sobriety.. but by this point it feels quite disingenuous. I read that entire last chapter with an "are you effing serious?" look on my face.

I was annoyed at the many casual references to driving under the influence. Zero expression of guilt for DUI. One story has Matthew driving his car into someone's front stairwell. What if he hit and killed someone? Are we supposed to let him off the hook because he was a movie star?

There's a belabored point that he'd have traded everything he had just to not have this disease, he was envious of normal people who can go off an not drink a quart of vodka each night. As if it was entirely beyond his control. Coming from a millionare movie star, it felt a bit cringy, tbh...

But after the fifth or sixth instance of traumatic nearly-life-ending event caused by alcohol / drugs, ruining a relationship of someone that truly cared for him, spiritual experience "seeing god" and then doing it all over again a year or two later, it's a bit hard to stay sympathetic.

If I had to divide my emotional response in five emojis corresponding to each fifth of the book, they'd be:

I liked Matthew less by the end of the book, which was sad. I started by feeling genuinely sympathetic because it seems he was dealt a bad hand as a kid.

The book was not very well-edited, several things are repeated; and it's not written in chronological order and no references to specific dates other than what you can work out by the movies or Friends season he's working on at the time... ๐ฌ so the order of events was a bit hard to follow.

There's a bit of behind-the-scenes of his job on Friends, but the book is mostly about his life as a perpetual cycle of hardcore drinking / drug trips, followed by major issues, then detoxes. There are about 4-6 cycles of this, where he manages to destroy a few relationships each instance.

I had no idea that he was such a good a tennis player! Amazing stories of his start in acting and how he landed the role on Friends. Despite some initial bad luck, a few things worked out for him. And he did a phenomenal job portraying Chandler. As he says in the book: he _was_ Chandler Bing! ๐

And, of course, as a Canadian who made it big in show business, I wanted to know more about his story. Well, this book reveals a lot about all the twists and turns. In the first few chapters, you really sympothize with him: he had a difficult start to life and childhood.

I enjoyed Friends as much as everyone; it's a classic show that will be forever listed as in the top sitcoms of all time. Matthew Perry played Chandler Bing, who was... just hilarious! I had heard of his personal problems throughout the filming of the show, but never delved much deeper.

Ok, second book of my recent foray into a newfound love of biographies: Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, by Matthew Perry.
I bought this one when it first came out but did not get around to reading now. I learned a lot reading this book, but.. it's a tough read. #booksky

I played it with my son two years ago, he was 7 at the time. And we still regularly refer back to some parts, like finding the broom alien in bed and using it to sweep up the sand to the door ๐คฃ
I got a C64 Ultimate recently so we will replay it again soon on our big screen TV this time! ๐คฉ
