Here's a look behind the scenes. The building walls are modular and they are actually a few layers of simple "sprites". Just simple quads with textures, giving an illusion of thickness.

You can peek through and see the interior of the buildings when the walls are destroyed.
This is one of those features often taken for granted because players probably do not notice it but will immediately feel something is not right if it's not implemented.
