I am sad to report that the manga is also like that. YMMV, I think it's generally pretty easy to just not really pay attention to it in the show, it adds no valuable commentary to what's going on in the race, the story or the overall racing culture. Just fanservice played 100% straight.

Like, it's a great riff on the concepts and themes of Initial D: a compelling cast discovering (or in Kanata's case, rediscovering) their competitive fire, punctuated by sick visual direction and pulse-pounding eurobeat, but the creeper shit actively makes it worse. Wonder if the manga's like that.
