On the one hand, I'm inclined to say no. We have so many more options now that we wouldn't commit that kind of time to one game.

But then the speedrunning community exists. And there are evergreen games like Dark Souls and Skyrim that people spend forever replaying. And roguelikes.

I guess the expectation was that you were going to play through the game literally dozens of times, and steadily learn the patterns.

I mastered Sonic 2 as a tiny child, so I don't remember the learning process, but even today I can dominate the game by sheer memory-instinct.
