The photo shows a portico entrance to the historic mansion at Cheekwood Estates & Botanical Gardens in Nashville, Tennessee. The portico features a tile floor and several arched openings along the left side. The walls and ceiling are painted in various shades of blue to mimic Horace-Bénédict de Saussure’s cyanometer device.

The Swiss scientist and mountaineer invented the cyanometer (or cyanomètre) in 1789. A simple tool made to measure the blueness of the sky, it is essentially a circle of paper with gradients of Prussian blue that move from white to black in fifty-two distinct degrees of color. Saussure, along with subsequent scientifically minded explorers like Alexander von Humboldt, used the device to demonstrate that the color of the sky grows darker with increases in elevation.

COLORSCAPES, an immersive, site-specific exhibition by the acclaimed Chicago art collective Luftwerk took over Cheekwood in the summer of 2022, and this outdoor installation was called Sky Blue. The full exhibit is described and pictured here: https://cheekwood.org/calendar-events/colorscapes/

SkyBlue for BlueSky 🦋

COLORSCAPES was one of my favorite exhibits at Cheekwood (Nashville) and this portion of the exhibit transformed existing architecture in the portico into a cyanometer, a simple tool invented by Swiss scientist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure to measure the blueness of the sky. ☁️

Jason, if you see this… thank you for all that you do for our family, and for putting up with me! 🫶

So, what are “we” planting this fall? 😂

Meanwhile, his much larger garden has thrived and I’ve been happily enjoying the fruits of his labor all summer! 🥒🥕🌿🍅🫑🍓🫛👨‍🌾 I’m going to miss the endless supply of cucumbers when we’re in the dead of winter.

My little raised garden went okay-ish. We managed one teeny meal of stunted carrots, a few small bell peppers, and a steady stream of tomatoes—some with cracks, ugh. But after the first snake of the season slithered onto our porch, I’ve relied on the husband & kids to keep it watered for me.

I planted squash, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and bell peppers. I studied the UT Extension’s gardening calendar and pretended I knew what I was doing.

Y’all, I hadn't even finished adding soil before he had dug up several plots in the yard. 😂

He doesn’t respond well to nagging though (I can’t imagine why) so I had mostly dropped it.

Then back in March, Costco had raised garden beds on sale.

Initially, I thought I'd just try my own hand at gardening, but knowing he doesn’t like to be outdone, I told him all about my new hobby. 💪

With our oldest off to college our schedule has lightened a bit, and I’ve been itching for him to start another garden.

We both love fresh veggies, but he’s way more outdoorsy than I am and totally unbothered by the creepy crawlies. 🕷️

Anyone know if there’s a plan to make @thestorygraph.com a more social experience? Asking on behalf of GR converts who miss the comments and notes.

My July stats for tax… I usually don’t read strictly fiction or only audio, but I had lots of time in the car and went down a dystopian rabbit hole.

My baby brother is having his first baby! 😭 I’ve never crocheted anything before (Woobles excluded) and have been recovering from hand surgery, but I think I did OK with this baby blanket pattern from TL Yarn Crafts (she’s so lovely to listen to & easy to learn from). Can't wait to meet my nephew! 🥰

I haven’t been on here in a while due to a broken finger so I thought I’d share a few pics of the cute culprit. This little ball of energy loves nothing more than running free and he’s much stronger & faster than me when he sees a chance to escape. Be careful grabbing the collar of a determined dog!

Our tulip magnolia tree and daffodils have been showing off this week. I’ve often wondered if tulip magnolias were included in a tree giveaway in our town before we moved here because it seems every other yard has one. They’re beautiful this time of year!

Adolescence… wow! I was simultaneously in awe of the amazing performances by this cast and at times forgot they were acting and felt crushed by the weight of this devastating story. Heart-wrenching (especially as a mom of two teens), but a must watch.

Few housekeeping items for those who are new to this kind of severe weather threat. First, know where you are on a map. Warnings are issued by polygons. If one of those polygons pops up on the map, know if you're inside or outside of the polygon. Need help? Use GPS on your phone.

Spring break meal planning & I can't decide if it's still soup season or if I want everything grilled outside.

We also alternate constantly btw southern meat & three, NSNG (no sugar/grain) & vegetarian due to mixed preferences, which makes planning super FUN.

At least Friday is a no-brainer! 🍕🥧

When Amazon launched in 1995, there were 5,500 indie bookshops in the U.S., with 7,000 locations. By May of 2023, that number had decreased to 2,185 indies & 2,599 locations.

When you purchase audiobooks via Libro.fm vs. Audible, you directly support indie bookshops. Let's make that number grow ❤️
