Backed by a sheer cliff wall, monumental statues line the shore like sentinels facing out to sea. The statues resemble the Egyptian god Horus with hawk-like faces and a shawl of feathers. They each kneel resting weight forward on front limbs, but each statue erodes more than the last as the line extends down the shore. Children stand on the nearest hawk monument. One holds as staff and stares out as a line of doves flies past.

From the tray of your mini fax machine you grab a stack of tweets printed on index cards and read them over breakfast. You use a corded phone to call a driverless Lyft to take you to your job at the library.

When I was a kid, fantasy was forbidden in our house. For years I stared longingly at this book at the library, but I was afraid reading it might send me to hell.

As an adult, this book represents healing and the future. It sits prominently on my shelf, and remains my favorite of your works.
