I had a phase change in grad school, where I went from (a) citing papers i had only skimmed in order to bolster the strength of my claims, to (b) citing scholarship i loved and thought about all the time… I feel like too few scholars make it to state (b)… they gotta dial down the pressure so

A simulation for #ibphysics students who haven't started their IA yet (due 20 April):

And a corresponding blog post for teachers:

Both pages are freely available for everyone. Happy physics-ing!
Beautiful explanation of chiral-induced spin selectivity by my friend David Waldeck, who passed away recently:

this is really, really good ❤️ thank you for sharing
hey autobio, A Matter of Choices, is a really good read!

Very cool, I'm going to use this! What about an option to adjust the number of points?
I have sometimes given students a copy of McGuire’s Teach yourself how to learn, esp if they are going to a big college. Very readable, relevant, research-based, etc. Basically everything @physgal.bsky.social would tell you, but in a book :)
A challenge is that my “get started” repertoire is a lot of drawing diagrams, making lists, etc, and the AIs don’t do that (neither do answer keys), so students have one more reason to think I’m blowing smoke when I tell them to draw a FBD or make a list of known and unknown quantities
My feeling is that students are throwing their homework problems to the AI because they don’t know how to do it (or maybe, how to get started?) but have a genuine interest in learning how to solve such problems, either because they see that as a learning goal or for test prep. What do you think?
Incredible new motion tracking online app: phystracker.org Check out that "Analysis" tab! #iTeachPhysics
maybe something like this, discussing Feynman diagrams? www.ias.edu/ideas/2009/a...
Or maybe, if your Ss are good at decomposing vectors, make up a problem with a zillion forces? I see this issue too, and i think AI is to blame
Hey #iteachphysics, what are you using for nuclear/radiation experiments?
I have students rotate their hair sample so they can infer the cross section shape — leads to valuable discussions about different types of hair and hair discrimination
Two new 🎢 things to share this weekend:

On a personal note, I've started writing for the InThinking IB Physics site. I've got lots to share over the next couple years 🎢

A gift for science teachers in 🇺🇸: I wrote a 45-minute lesson plan based on MLK Jr's Nobel Prize speech in which students contrast the pace of scientific/technological progress with the pace of moral justice 🎢

Trying emergent curriculum in large-enrollment intro college physics this semester. Each unit:
1. demo ⚗️
2. theory-building 👪
3. conventions and notation 🧑🏫
4. worked examples 🧑🏫
5. craft and choose learning goal 👪
6. write example problems 👪
7. homework, tests 🧑🎓
Will share details later!
