I’ve often wondered if we might have gotten more movement toward ditching the electoral college if Obama had won an EV/popular vote split in 2012 (or Harris had in 2024). Instead it’s just been two shitty Republicans benefitting from it in our lifetime, so Dems hate it and Republicans love it.
Like, I have a lot of problems with Kamala Harris, I can certainly sit and patiently explain why she sucks. But I don’t think she would have been sending legal residents to Central American torture prisons and sending ICE troops to murder citizens in the streets, ya know? Both things can be true!
Oh certainly they have not! And I want that and will continue to push for that and vote for people in primaries who do say that. But in the meantime, even a shitty Dem who won’t say “abolish ICE” is better than the fucking ghouls that are currently running things, and that’s not exactly a hard call.
I want to change the system *and* do the best we can within that system as it exists now, because the other side is building concentration camps, and even if Dems don’t do everything I want, it’s still meaningful to at least stop that shit.
Like, I dunno, the Senate is fucked and disenfranchising and I’d like to get rid of it too! But that’s a heavy lift (much heavier than ending gerrymandering), and in the meantime, I think we should still be running candidates for Senate seats, ya know?
Yeah, and I don’t want anyone to have it! Just like I don’t want people to have guns. But if someone is actively shooting at me, I do want a gun to shoot back at them (at least until we both put our guns down) and I don’t feel like I’m abandoning my principles in saying that.

If they’re gonna ruthlessly gerrymander everywhere they can (mid-cycle even!), then I want my people (inasmuch as Dems are as close to “my people” as our shitty system provides) to gerrymander back just as hard, it not harder. Meekly laying down and taking it out of principle ain’t it.
Like, I guess Hungary finally got fed up enough to kick out Orbán, but I’d rather not cede supermajorities for 16 years in the hopes that people will eventually get fed up enough to override their gerrymanders and vote in Ted Cruz over Donald Trump Jr or whatever.
I absolutely don’t give a shit about finding a consensus. It would be nice, but I’m not holding my breath. But if it’s ever going to happen, it’s not going to be from them, like, being inspired by how stoically we stood there and let them kick the shit out of us.
I’d desperately love to end gerrymandering, but in the meantime, fuck it, let ‘er rip and gerrymander right back. Make a horrifying California map, shove it in a bunch of Republicans faces until they get on board too and we can actually get a consensus to do something.
