Since it’s getting very warm/hot early, again, there’s no better time for USA Today’s heat safety tips. :p

Vaianu, a subtropical cyclone
Fallstreaks, including a hole punch cloud. I’d guess that the quasi-linear formation was caused by a contrail higher up that fell through the supercooled altocumulus layer. We are under the Dulles AP flight path.
Our convective friend persists
Alaska and Libya can’t have all of the subtropical cyclone fun. This convective low is between Portugal and the Azores, moving west. 🐻⌚️
Someone has displeased the subtropical cyclone/polar low gods…
Colorado will have its lowest statewide peak snowpack on record (8.4″ SWE), which has likely already peaked due to our incoming heatwave. Official records date to 1987.
These paltry numbers below will likely plunge this week and next weekend.

December 2025 through February 2026 was the 2nd warmest winter on record for the Contiguous U.S. according to Prism climate data. The widespread record to near record warmth in the west easily outweighed the cool temps in the east. 🔥🔥🔥

The Blizzard of 2026.
It’s been 26 days since the snow/sleet. It remains in some areas shadowed from the sun and in piles, but it has become quite patchy. :)
Our snow/sleet fell 23 days ago. Temperatures rising into the 40s and 50s lately have aided the melt, but work continues.
The evolving situation
How things are going so far
@aliciambentley.bsky.social’s standardized anomalies in the sea level pressure for 0600 UTC tell the tale quite well. A large area of 3 to 4+ sigmas below climatology for this time of year.
Many February low pressure records could be set over the next 24 hours in and near ID as well as northwest NE/western SD.
Happy Valentine’s Day. ☺️
