We were just deplaned at DTW. The CEE @umich trying to get to the biannual AEESP meeting. Hope to get back ON the plane soon. @aeesprofs.bsky.social

A chocolate cake with red and white decorations and lit candles shaped as the number 75. Bold text reads: ‘The NSF Turns 75 Today. What has it done over the past 7 decades?’ The background is a celebratory red with a spray-paint texture.
HAPPY 75th, NSF!
We’re celebrating this milestone by highlighting some of NSF’s most transformative accomplishments—innovations that have shaped our world and continue to drive progress in health, technology, the environment, and beyond.

Interesting. Mathew Lippincott from UM team successfully led a new std for source sep plumbing 4 the IPC this yr that will be available in US by 2026, addressing a main concern raised in your paper. I encourage you to check out our 5 prior papers on perception (Alex Cohen, Tatiana Schreiber).
My students & I kicked it off this wkend by generating about over 12 pounds of P-rich struvite from source separated urine in our NEWtrient Recovery System at U-Michigan. Removing P allows us to create 90 gal of 3.3:0:1.1 NPK urine-derived fertilizer for regenerative farm and campus turf studies.

Just finished. 9,000 in person, at least another 20,000 streamed live.
Got my #reSIStance t-shirt & wearing today to some meetings (are those maize & blue colors Barb?). Sisters-in-law is on my “Must Listen” list. I appreciate the knowledge sharing provided. @barbmcquade.bsky.social @kimberlyeatkins.bsky.social @jillwine-banks.bsky.social @joycewhitevance.bsky.social
SCOOP: The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, arguably the nation's most powerful scientific organization, is bending to political pressure and removing terms like "health equity" from pending reports. Members are not happy. Story by me: www.statnews.com/2025/02/20/n...

And Env Engr. I’ve spent ~5 yrs adding chemical risk assessment & QMRA plus risk comm to my Water & Sanitation Design & Practice course. Using materials from @chuckhaas.bsky.social & Matt Seeger WSU. Then add engr & PH ethics to complete it all. Would love to share w/ others doing the same @ AEESP
I’ve been off Bluesky for ~ a year. Thought I would return by sharing a cool picture I took from a boat trip into a Louisiana Bayou last month. This family of raccoons was so cute!
@watermicrobe.bsky.social Sorry-forgot to tag you!
It is always great to meet up with former students and post-docs. Will Tarpeh receives $100k Paul L Busch Award today at WEFTEC and Lauren Stadler’s student wins $25k Canham. Also with Ameet Pinto and Charles Bott.
All who know me know I am a resource recovery person. So I just want to share the outcomes of my most recent resource recovery-related experiment: URINE is **the best** Wordle starting word. I’ve been using it for a month and typically get 2 letters but always at least 1 (today was 3). Give it a go!
I miss not being there but I’m in the teen years x2. As an experienced colleague told me recently, it is ok to “step away” for a few yrs when you just need to be a “present parent,” despite kids telling you they don’t need you or ignore you. If they need you & you are not there, it will matter.
What a historic photo!!!!
Question- are these hoses that were drained or not drained between showers? Is 1o and 2o disinfectant used in the water system and, if so, what type(s)? Softened water or not? Meta data surrounding this phenomenon is helpful to know.
I’m sure you did a service. I find rough reviews, although painful, usually make authors better researchers and writers with time. It did for me. That which does not kill me makes me stronger. 😉
I agree. It is up to the editor to target reviewers who have expertise and, although imperfect, the vast majority of papers improve substantively through the process.
My students do a range of things these days, most of which are less expensive than bioprocess reactors & microbiome work. ~ 12 yrs ago, I landed on $10k in supplies/yr per lab-intensive student. Maybe start there and build on it for 2023. It is much more (at least double?) today.
Excited re our new paper where public health, nutritional science, & environ engr joined for a system-scale analysis from source-2-tap. We show that patterns learned about distributed & piped H2O in rural places do not necessarily apply to urban places in Addis Ababa pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
Hoping this is the new place for civil discourse and scientific sharing. Happy to see some friends from the former site already here and leading the way.
