The @broadbent.bsky.social Progress Summit is one week away. The theme of 'Defending Democracy Across Borders' is so important to us as Canadians, and we will hear from speakers who are leading the fight for freedom and equality around the world and right here at home.
Elbows up: A leaked Liberal caucus briefing note shows the Mark Carney government fears that regulating arms exports to the USA might upset the Americans.

While campaigning on progressive values, Mark Carney's early policy choices—like ordering striking unions back to work and conceding to the US Trump administration—contradict this image.

What can Canadian politicians learn from Zohran Mamdani’s successful New York City mayoral campaign, which energized progressives and young people? @jeyantvo.bsky.social asked @broadbent.bsky.social executive director @hassum.bsky.social youtu.be/PgmF-tta5tk?...
"Instead of implementing the biggest service reductions in recent Canadian history, this budget should seek to implement measures that raise revenue."

The Air Canada flight attendant strike was illegal. It was also profoundly Canadian: ricochet.media/labour/the-a...
the CBC was founded as a bulwark against US cultural imperialism, to ensure we had canadian news and canadian culture.
there should be a renewed emphasis on that mandate, particularly to stop reporting so much on what happens in the US for eyeballs and ad dollars.
I'm on today's The Big Story podcast @thebigstory.bsky.social talking about what went down in the Air Canada flight attendant's strike and how the events of this week could change the landscape for labour in the years to come ⬇️

What an excellent article!
"...how could our government claim to be fighting for democracy abroad while denying it to us at home?"
That's a question we should be asking in the UK in my opinion. Erosion of our freedom to assemble etc Palestine action for instance.
Canada will need powerful trade unions if we are to have any hope of staying strong & free as we face threats to truth, to peace & to equality for all, from both allies & enemies.

If Mark Carney had told voters he planned to drop retaliatory tariffs in order to stay in Trump’s good books (as he just did today), Carney simply would not be prime minister right now
This is another incredible flip-flop from a guy who appropriated “Elbows Up” as his campaign slogan
"If our leaders will not remember that history, workers will. The flight attendants have reminded us of a truth as old as Canada’s wartime strikes: when the system refuses fairness, defiance is democracy."
Thank you 🙏🏻
«The true lesson of our history is that Canada thrived when we extended democracy beyond Parliament and into the workplace, when we treated unions not as threats but as essential partners, and when we recognized working-class Canadians as builders of national prosperity»
'The larger irony is that Carney campaigned on being the steady hand. His “Elbows Up” slogan promised Canadians agency, unity, and stability. He cast the present as a “generational challenge” on par with the fall of the Berlin Wall.'
I'm disappointed in Mark Carney & the Liberals, but not surprised
Thanks ♥️
Yes!
the Air Canada flight attendants' strike is a perfect example of "Just because something is legal, doesn't mean it's right"
Section 107 is a *bad* law. It's bad & wrong & the federal Liberals cannot call themselves "pro-worker" as long as it stays on the books

Excellent piece on why the Air Canada strike took Carney by surprise, and why labour dissent is in our DNA by Jen Hassum from @broadbent.bsky.social.
Really worth reading to understand the significance of this week’s labour victory.
Necessary reading, and good reminder of the power of people. More, please - inconvenience is the point. #cdnpoli
Canadian history is ever more important, it shows us how defiance protected democracy and why Section 107 needs to go. My op-ed: t.co/k98YurLv0D
By ordering Air Canada workers back on the job, Ottawa is borrowing from Doug Ford’s playbook. Back-to-work laws violate Charter rights & undermine collective bargaining, @hassum.bsky.social writes.

As Jen Hassum explains in a new column, Canada’s democracy depends on defiance, not obedience.
