In 2025, renewables overtook coal in global electricity generation for the first time in over 100 years.
Renewables: 33.8%
Coal: 33.0%
Coal fell below a third of global electricity generation for the first time in history.
Reporting what doesn’t work in #CDR matters too - here we explain why soil CO₂ flux measurements do not work for enhanced weathering #EW.
Key issue: biological (organic carbon) fluxes dwarf the EW signal, and shared drivers (pH, moisture) obscure attribution.

Happy birthday :-)
We are many to work on the IPCC 2027 Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CDRT-CCUS). Great responsibility, many challenges ahead, and a fantastic team to work with!
Bad news - we'll soon blow through the carbon budget for stabilizing global temperature at 1.5C
Good news - progress on clean energy suggests it is possible to stabilize by 2C www.nature.com/articles/s41...
What does the science say? Neither is a magic threshold. Every bit of warming matters.
Transitioning to a net-zero world is one of humanity's greatest challenges.
Here are some ways we can reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero: www.un.org/en/climatech...
Thanks David! Great meeting you here in Rome!
A black and white, close-up portrait of a woman with long, dark, slightly wavy hair, smiling and looking toward her upper right. Her hair is windswept, with loose strands framing her face. She wears a dark top under a light-colored cardigan. The background is a soft-focus, high-angle view of a city under an overcast sky.

New #enhancedweathering paper: Cation tracing reveals substantial weathering but no inorganic C sequestration. While inorganic C storage may lag behind, secondary reactions & cation retention may support soil organic C stabilization.

More than 150 experts are gathered in Rome, Italy this week to begin work on IPCC's Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, & Storage.
The author meeting is being held at FAO HQ & runs from 14 to 16 April 2026.

Here is what the journal Nature has to say about our paper on the increasing rate of #globalwarming:

The US government has agreed to pay TotalEnergies $928 million to cancel its offshore wind leases and redirect the money to oil and gas instead.
This is happening during the worst global energy crisis (per IEA) in history and as rising prices put huge pressure on households and businesses.
De N-VA wil #ETS2 uitstellen omdat energie duur is. Dat klinkt redelijk, maar het is de verkeerde knop. De grootste scheeftrekking zit niet in Europa, maar in onze eigen energiefactuur.
Vandaag in @demorgen.be : www.demorgen.be/meningen/wie...
I was interviewed by @aljazeera.com on impacts energy crisis.
We discussed Europe’s structural vulnerability due to fossil fuel imports, broader economic effects of price volatility & why this moment should sharpen focus on clean energy.

China's Xinhua news agency has just published this editorial cartoon in response to Trump's rejection of climate policies.
It is pretty clear that China views this as a HUGE geopolitical fumble by the US leaving the field clear for China's to win the global race to clean-tech hegemony

I am a climate scientist and this is correct.
As the planet warms, storms like the one today are getting stronger… and as the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the mid latitudes, it increases the risk of the “freezer door” swinging open.

NEW | Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in the EU power sector 🇪🇺⚡️
Our @ember-energy.org European Electricity Review is out today, showing wind and solar reaching 30% of EU power, compared to 29% for fossil fuels.
Here's what happened in EU electricity generation in 2025 🧵
