Lethal conflict after group fission in wild chimpanzees Territorial conflicts in animals can inform aspects of human warfare, but civil war, with its shifting group identities, has not been previously observed. We report a rare, permanent fission in the largest-known group of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)...

Glad we have a comprehensive article on the intra-community split in the Ngogo chimpanzees. It was shocking to see chimps that once had close, intimate friendships become violent, lethal enemies within just a couple of years!

Social science research on collective action wins National Science Foundation grant Social scientist Nils Reimer and his team have secured a three-year National Science Foundation award to study double standards in how people judge protests according to idealogical affiliations.

Winning a National Science Foundation grant for further exploration, UCSB researchers have found a person’s ideological position in favor of a protest action will often be at odds with the same action carried out by those who align with opposing ideological orientations 🪧

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request to Congress

I am shocked to see this language from the NSF.

“The U.S. National Science Foundation's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request reflects a strategic alignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment while eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects.”

NSF's Social, Behavioral and Economic Directorate has awarded only 16 grants since October.

No big budget cuts went through. No freeze. The courts have acted to keep funds flowing at every turn. The money just isn't going out.

Why...?

While the situation is grim at NIH, it's closer to catastrophic at NSF. They're just not able to move any money out the door. It appears OMB has them on lockdown. www.science.org/content/arti....

57 of my fellow students were arrested, academically disciplined, and barred from campus 2 weeks before finals.

And then the visas of some of those students were quietly revoked.

And then the DEI office was killed.

And then we watched our mentors’ grants evaporate over “woke”.

Are White Men Missing Out?: Differences in Friendship Closeness by Gender and Ethnoracial Identity - Sex Roles Sex Roles - Research has consistently found that boys’ and men’s friendships are less close, intimate, supportive, and satisfying than girls’ and women’s...

Fascinating new study about men’s friendships.

There’s a lot of evidence here that the “male loneliness crisis” is actually a white, wealthy man problem. Other men are building friendships with similar depth to women’s friendships.

By moving right on immigration & other key issues, and generally coming off as incompetent (esp on cost of living), UK Labour is losing vote share to left-wing parties AND to right-leaning ones. This is what happens when a party appeases its opponents & loses its core identity.

That's what I heard from the inside, too. They don't make awards (even when recommended for funding) and also don't reject proposals (for fear of backlash).
