Glad we have a comprehensive article on the intra-community split in the Ngogo chimpanzees. It was shocking to see chimps that once had close, intimate friendships become violent, lethal enemies within just a couple of years!

Winning a National Science Foundation grant for further exploration, UCSB researchers have found a person’s ideological position in favor of a protest action will often be at odds with the same action carried out by those who align with opposing ideological orientations 🪧

I am shocked to see this language from the NSF.
“The U.S. National Science Foundation's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request reflects a strategic alignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment while eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects.”
The NSF 2027 budget has noted that they will close out the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Science Program (SBE). This is not a good thing. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-202...
New preprint out today (osf.io/preprints/ps...). We tested whether AI agents are actually infiltrating online surveys.
Spoiler alert: they aren't

A line graph showing awards over time at NSF's SBE. The line for this year, 2026, is extremely FLAT compared to prior years. By this time in 2025, 179 grants had been awarded. In 2021, it was 243. This year... 16.
NSF's Social, Behavioral and Economic Directorate has awarded only 16 grants since October.
No big budget cuts went through. No freeze. The courts have acted to keep funds flowing at every turn. The money just isn't going out.
Why...?

While the situation is grim at NIH, it's closer to catastrophic at NSF. They're just not able to move any money out the door. It appears OMB has them on lockdown. www.science.org/content/arti....
A thread on our recent paper (w/Raihan Alam @raihanalam) in PNAS on why punishment often fails and what it means for crime, cooperation, democracy, and the rule of law. I’m super excited for it, it’s the lab’s most extensive experimental work to date. Check it out! 1/

57 of my fellow students were arrested, academically disciplined, and barred from campus 2 weeks before finals.
And then the visas of some of those students were quietly revoked.
And then the DEI office was killed.
And then we watched our mentors’ grants evaporate over “woke”.
New paper out in Social Psychological and Personality Science with @mohammadatari.bsky.social!
We ask: How does moral diversity shape communities’ responses to norm violations? Across 7 studies (N = 235k+), we find a surprisingly consistent pattern.

Fascinating new study about men’s friendships.
There’s a lot of evidence here that the “male loneliness crisis” is actually a white, wealthy man problem. Other men are building friendships with similar depth to women’s friendships.
“The most dangerous threat to Black studies right now is not coming from the federal government… It is coming from institutions that have decided, in advance, that accommodation is the same thing as survival.”
Entertaining and interesting post by @kurtjgray.bsky.social on how science works using his own research on moral psychology in contrast to @jonathanhaidt.bsky.social's work.
Our lab has a new postdoc position that is ideal for someone interested in a career in data science or statistical consulting and an interest in gender diversity / trans health. apply.interfolio.com/182278
When you collect data online, are the results from humans or AI? In a project led by Booth PhD student Grace Zhang, we estimate the prevalence of AI agents on commonly used survey platforms:

NEW: The bad news about international-student enrollments at American colleges just got worse. An exclusive @chronicle.com analysis of just-released State Department data shows new visa issuances in the summer of 2025 dropped by more than a third. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...
After nearly a decade measuring American public support for political violence, @nathankalmoe.bsky.social and I have published a somewhat comprehensive guide to measuring these attitudes. This includes historical comparisons and responses to common critiques. doi.org/10.1093/poq/...
By moving right on immigration & other key issues, and generally coming off as incompetent (esp on cost of living), UK Labour is losing vote share to left-wing parties AND to right-leaning ones. This is what happens when a party appeases its opponents & loses its core identity.
That's what I heard from the inside, too. They don't make awards (even when recommended for funding) and also don't reject proposals (for fear of backlash).
This is so bleak. If U.S. American science is ever to recover, we might need to rebuilt the NSF from the ground up.
The National Science Foundation is systematically being converted to the National AI and Quantum Research Foundation.
“I see it as the administration exerting political control over what has traditionally been NSF’s ability to fund the best science.”
