At a long-term research site near Abisko, Sweden, researcher Mats Björkman (BECC coordinator in Gothenburg) & colleagues have studied how methane moves between land & atmosphere for over 30 years. Their findings suggest that drier soils can increase methane uptake: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0vu...
Our coordinator @edithhammer.bsky.social recieved a visit from the Swedish Radio show Naturmorgon. She took the field reporter on a visit to the bustling world beneath the ground. There were several great segments in the programme; do have a listen (in Swedish): www.sverigesradio.se/avsnitt/live...
Swedish old-growth forests store 83 % more carbon than managed forests, according to a new study from Lund University with BECC & @mergesweden.bsky.social members Anders Ahlström & Didac Pascual. The difference is substantially larger than previous estimates: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HtS...
*Since -98, the NMT Days have been organised by the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Medicine & the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. Thousands of upper secondary students & teachers from across Sweden visit LU for a full week of popular‑science lectures and hands-on demonstrations.
BECC-member Jagdeep Singh presented his Zero Waste Roadmap Game at a WS during the NMT-days* in Lund.
- The game combines gamification, sustainability transitions & circular economy to simulate how to move from a linear to a circular approach in managing organic waste, Jagdeep told the students.
We're co-organising seminars at Sustainability week in Lund:
13/4: 10 back, 10 forward for the energy transition
14/4: 10 Back, 10 Forward for Flora, Fauna and Fungi
15/4: 10 back, 10 forward for the European food system

Alexandra Pongracz on Why You Shouldn’t Miss Swedish Climate Symposium:
– It's a rare opportunity to meet colleagues from disciplines & sectors we don’t usually meet in our work... all gathering around the same purpose: ensuring climate knowledge leads to actions & societal change: shorturl.at/FCQYd
New publication with funding from BECC and MERGE provides new perspectives on forestry and land use:
Our feelings towards nature influence how we support pollinators in our gardens. A new study with BECC PI Anna Persson et.al, highlights this connection. Particularly in the context of urbanisation, which is reducing green spaces & people’s contact with nature: www.mgeo.lu.se/en/article/o...
New documentary at Swedish Television about microorganisms in the soil and their role in agriculture, cultivation and how plants thrive. The documentary features our coordinator, @edithhammer.bsky.social and colleagues! www.svtplay.se/video/KnDAkn...
Pics from yesterday's seminar "AI for Biodiversity and Climate Science". The room was filled to the last seat and we had a great day. Huge thanks to all participants and speakers!
New exciting paper with Lu Fluxes involvement, highlighting how trees, ponds and grazing strongly shape greenhouse gas dynamics in Sahel savannas, showing how complex and dynamic semi‑arid ecosystems really are.
Well Done Alek!

Old air samples hint at effects of climate change
Through DNA analysis of old air samples collected by the Swedish Armed Forces, Nils Cronberg (botany researcher & BECC PI) & colleagues, show that spore dispersal of northern mosses changed the past 35 years: www.lunduniversity.lu.se/article/old-...

Welcome to the seminar/webinar: Pesticides and Pollinators
November 12, 10:30 -12:00
Researchers & policy experts explore how pesticides affect pollinators, what new research tells us about risks & resilience & what strategies we can implement to protect pollinators & by extension, the ecosystems.
And in this article, Henrik Smith himself comments on the award, and he has a message for academia: www.cec.lu.se/article/henr...
