The obvious answer here is that the student protest movement was broadly smeared as anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists, and a variety of institutions from government, media and the universities acted as if that smear was true, threatening, suspending, expelling and even deporting students.
Have you somehow missed, to name just one example, all the high school walkouts to protest ICE?

I had given up on football for CTE/the Kaepernick ban even though it was once my favorite sport. But after my wife died, a friend -- knowing I was isolating -- just started coming over for Niners games. It was super important for me and I started following again. But yeah, I feel so conlficted.
