Currently reading Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett and while I have some structural and presentational issues, I can't deny reading the main character talk about musicals is a mood, and also this book is probably better sex education than 70% of American teens had access to.

If you’re thinking of diving into graphic novels, I’ve been sharing these two resources a lot lately:

@victoriaying.com on scripting: www.victoriaying.com/blog/2019/11...

@hellocookie.bsky.social on pitching and outlines: stephaniecooke.ca/resources/

Then buy their books to say thank you!

Y’all, Melissa Blue has such good thoughts about writing and story structure. I HIGHLY recommend anything she has to say on this topic.

Artwork of Cass, the lead guitar playing magical girl from the novel Magica Riot. She is a young Black woman in a dark yellow jacket, black skirt, yellow bow, and black gloves with yellow fingers. She has black twist out hair with yellow highlights and sparkles, and golden yellow eyes.

Check out this stunning art of Magica Riot's badass lead guitar player and second-in-command, Cass! Done by @ocarinia.bsky.social! I love how she turned out! 😍 #MagicaRiotArt

You’ve got a voice no one else has, and someone out there needs your story. When you quit, they never get the chance to hear it.

Artwork of Nova, a trans magical girl, from the novel “Magica Riot.” She has pale blue hair in fluffy twintails and blue eyes, and is wearing jeans and a black shirt with the trans pride flag on it along with writing that says “If this flag offends you, I’ll help you pack.” She is posing with her hand up by her eye in a sideways peace sign while winking

Happy Pride from Magica Riot's own trans magical girl drummer, Nova!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ended up tearing up a little at the end.
Engaging story, thrilling, a little twist thrown in. It was great.

The cover of my queer young adult coming-of-age novel, Victory Lap, co-written with my pal Riley Alexis Wood. The cover is illustrated by my other pal Ursula Gray.

The main characters, Josh, Kiki, and Mel, lie on the grass. The grass and general colour palette is yellow. Josh is a white guy who looks kinda sad, with short rust-colour hair and a blue hoodie with a horizontal pink stripe. Kiki is a white girl who has long pink hair, a little grin, and a blue blouse. Mel is Vietnamese and has a darker skin tone, smirking confidently, and has dark greenish hair and matching lipstick, has a choker around her neck, and wears a pink jacket.

The cover of my middle grade epic fantasy, Goblin Girl. Illustrated by @underpalewater. The four main characters stand on a grassy field in front of a cloud-obscured castle, around which airships sail. Gertrude is a 12yo goblin holding a sword. Beatrix is a 12yo Black human wearing a tiara, who has magic purple sparkles around her hand. Edwin is a 17yo salamander knight in a sword of armour, holding a two-handed sword. Leaf is a tree and also a 10yo boy, a tree boy if you will.

The cover of my book, Lonely in Happy Town. Designed by Tyler Cleroux. The font is reminiscent of Animal Crossing and there are two gaming controllers with hearts on them, on a pink backdrop. E.M. Anderson, author of The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher and The Keeper of Lonely Spirits says it’s “[A] cozy but cathartic read about love, anxiety, and rebuilding community.”

Always a shock when you revisit something you read in high school and it turns out to be way better than you remember.

I always struggled with poetry but Wilfred Owen really is a fantastic writer.

Artwork of the five main characters of "Magica Riot" - Sara, Claire, Nova, Cass, and Hana - above a progress pride flag and text that reads "Queer Magical Girls for Pride." More text then reads "EVERY magical girl in the Maidensong Magica series is canonically queer! And the stories focus on trans protagonists!"

Below this is the cover art for the novel "Magica Riot" and the short novelette "Jade Evergreen and the Perils of Polybius," along with text identifying them as a novel and a short.

To the writer wondering if their story is “too weird”:
Weird is marketable.
Weird is memorable.
Just make sure weird also has structure.
Otherwise, it’s chaos in a trench coat.
