Scuppered the old Tyne and Wear Structure Plan before the ink was dry. Totally undermined the transport strategy based on the Metro while the system was in its infancy.
Proud to say I last set foot in the place back in 1993!

The damage was much more widespread than just Gateshead. It's changed now, but for a long while it was the place for a decent bit of shopping and the free parking made it a lot easier than Newcastle or Sunderland for ppl coming from further afield.

And of course the crash mode and live tracker will be useful for others to locate which ditch you've fallen into whilst sozzled.
Not that I've ever done that.

Just trying to help.

AHH. I missed that, but you can show pubs on and near the route. Why isn't everyone using it for that alone hic!

Quite an incredible article.

No mention of the impact it had, and continues to have on Gateshead town centre.

The shops that closed, the damage to the High Street.

No mention that it's such a resounding success, Intu went bust a few years back.

Some suggestions.

1. Highlight the monthly price. It's still less than a coffee a month and a bargain.

2. Highlight that it can be used to plot any trip and not just the marked traffic free routes.

3. It would be good to have a mode where you can plot routes without navigation

It's ace though

cycle.travel | route-planner and maps - traffic-free & quiet roads The best-kept secret of a great ride - find scenic routes with fewer cars.

I think the route planner is ace.
It's a crowded market though and you're competing with the likes of ridewithgps, cycle.travel and komoot.
Getting traction will be hard and I think you need to be patient.

A screen grab from the telegraph (I know, and I feel grubby) where the shadow transport minister Richard Holden and the Tories are pledging to drop blanket 20mph limits. Vote Tory vote for increased road danger.

Vote Conservative. Vote for increased road danger and KSIs.
Holden and the Tories only care about drivers..

Yes, Swiss scientist Fritz Zwicky coined the term “dark matter” which is impressive, but he also coined the term “spherical bastard” to describe people who are bastards no matter which way you look at them, and I think that should be celebrated more.

It would level up between town centre car parks and out of town retail parks too.

I doubt that would make any difference to the antisocial and irresponsible idiots.. Look at the number of police and dash related programming.
What's needed is enforcement, either directly by police or by submitted 3rd party reporting. That's the only thing that these morons are afraid off.

I would happily use such an app.
It would be possible to have a single app to report numerous offences including yellow line parking and footway parking too. A bit like the fixmystreet app.

There should be a mandatory parking charge at all public car parks.
It's insane that you can drive whatever you want to a shop and park for free, but then pay for any carrier bags on environmental grounds.
The tax for bags changed public behaviour. I think a "parking tax" would do similar.

From Barcelona to Paris, cities thrive with women in charge. It’s all about sharing public space | Melissa and Chris Bruntlett Female mayors have had notable successes in making transport in urban areas benefit everyone, write Melissa and Chris Bruntlett, co-authors of Women Changing Cities

"More cars means less space to walk, cycle, push a pram or use a mobility aid safely. It means the stress of navigating noisier & more congested streets. Ultimately it means less diversity in street activity."

The UK needs a much bigger clampdown on dodgy driving.
Much stiffer penalties for ghost plates too, with 3rd party reporting.
Link between insurance, vehicle and owner data, and convictions so nothing relies on goodwill or honesty.

Our brand new Route Builder will be available to everyone from tomorrow, with version 2.0 (right) available to Patrons from tomorrow also.

Super super proud of this, and the first of its kind - think of it as history-adjacent AllTrails 🚶

Weirdly Trump's war may be the best thing as it's weaning the world off fossil fuels quicker than we could have hoped.
Flying is being cut back. People are driving less and switching to EVs. Govts are rolling out renewable generation quicker than ever.
So there's hope (whilst the war continues)
