The chart makes me wonder when the term "swears" started to replace profanity or obscenity. Is it a language shift or another one of those US vs UK terminology variants? In my experience, "swears" is not often used in Canada and we have the worst elements of both language variants.

She found a nice goldsmith that helped her pick out the meltable gold from pieces with historical or artistic value that she needed to take elsewhere. She got a reasonable amount for the meltable stuff.

I had the same edition when I took a Hegel class back in the 70s. All my other Hegel texts are little yellow Reclam editions.

My beloved wife has decided that she wishes to divest herself of all the jewelry she has accumulated over the years. (Mostly gifts from family, rarely worn). This is, apparently, not an easy task. I suppose this is the reason people invest in ephemeral wealth like bitcoin. No physical residue...

Very old photo of two children in a store.

Very old photo of two children in a store.

My little sister just sent me a photo of us in the local shop around 1959 - 1960 (my estimate). I was a lot better looking & blond back then.

The first substantial computer program I wrote was a designed to add footnotes to Wordstar text. I was doing my PhD in 17th century mystic lit & I could not work without footnotes...then I was stabbed in the back by the MLA.

So I see that the US has reached the stage of Henry II. "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?" I suppose that bombing the Vatican will be added to the military bills this month. (I know: Not my circus (not catholic, not US citizen),not my monkeys.)

Isn't this how gangs fight over protection rackets? (Well, at least in movies this is how they do it.)

Got a PhD, taught at a Uni for 25 years, published books & articles, retired and still wish I had been more organized as a student. sigh.

Working on a review for an article submission and trying hard not to be the asshole 2nd reader that we all know and hate. It's actually not that hard as its quite good and they already cite something I wrote so I don't even have to option of suggesting they cite me even if I would be irrelevant.

Man on deck with EU t-shirt and German shepherd.

I hear that the EU is interested in having Canada as a member. I bought the shirt so I could be prepared. (My German shepherd seems to like the idea as long as she can bring along her Famous Blue Raincoat...er Ball.)

It depends on your qualifications. There is an express entry program for skilled workers. I used to be on hiring committees at my University and some foreign applications were considered because of the (rare) discipline of the candidate.

I would consider a trans person or a woman in need of a medically necessary abortion as someone at risk in the US right now although the option of movement within their country makes that argument weaker.US immigrant appilications still have significant advantages (language, job certification, etc.)

I taught swimming & worked as a lifeguard and did pool maintenance in High School and during my undergad degree; evenings, summers, weekends etc. When I worked on beaches the teaching could be brutally cold.

We had laws or policies that considered Vietnam war asylum seekers as simply immigrants and did not consider their military status (draft) in applications for residence. (late 1960s?) I think we should revive some of those policies.

Today's run was in practically tropical weather (+7 c) and I zoned out, forgot the turnaround point & ran 11.75 K instead of the target 10. I like running & with a good audiobook I am usually quite comfortable to keep going. However, my joints are old & I should be more careful (superego=wife).

For no apparent reason, this morning I felt the need to refresh my memory of the Blomberg–Fritsch affair that happened in 1938. Scandals were used to change the leadership of the Wehrmacht to make it more compliant to the political goals of the NSDAP.

The audiobook dept. (Audible) does the same thing. What do they think a retired English Prof. with vision problems is going to do? I suspect that if they sold drugs we would be praised for the length of time we managed to avoid rehab.

It took an hour of doom scrolling this morning for me to notice that it is April 1st. What to do when April Fool's day and Groundhog day (the movie sort) have combined to take over reality?

I received my bag of diastatic malt from Amazon (product is made in Canada) and today I made my first batch of Brötchen with the "secret ingredient." Why do recipie authors always have a magic ingredient or process? In any case the Brötchen are darker, more chewy and have a different flavour.

I made the mistake of saying this to the nurse who asked me that question during eye surgery... In my defense, they had drugged me so that I would not twitch while the lens was being inserted & my judgement was altered. Oh well, my eyes work so I guess they are used to dealing with patients

Cool tech toy: I bought a usb cable tester on Temu for under $3 CDN. It works for USB C, Lighting iphone, & micro USB cables with 5 lines that light up if it is ok. So far I have found one micro USB cable unfit for power transmission.

Adventures in recycling: I had an old solar panel from a dead security cam. Yesterday I decided to use it to charge wireless earphones that still use the micro USB cable size. I set it up in the evening and wondered, for a bit, why it did not charge. It works fine today...in the sunlight. Duh.

I don't think it will ever warm up again here. Today, I had to run without sunglasses again because it was -18 C and anything on my face got iced up in a few minutes. The road was icy too. I suppose that this summer when we are in forest fire hell I will regret these words.

I listened to SRF Heute Morgen & discovered that Switzerland stopped payment on their Patriot missile system order because of delay & price increases. The US simply took F35 payments and used it for the Patriot weapons. Now I wonder about Canadian prepayment for F35s. www.watson.ch/schweiz/arme...

I found the TV show Paris Police on the ARD app, but ARD won't show it to me in Canada for copyright reasons. (that covers mostly anything that is not Tatort, sigh) I finally found it elsewhere & I like the first episode, but Karin will not watch it with me as it is "too violent" for her taste.

It is nice to hear that we are still considered a cultural safe haven by some portion of the US population. Welcome to the frozen north.
