IT’S YOUR BODY, AND YOU MAKE THE RULES It’s National Condom Day. Let’s talk tips to encourage condom use with clients.

Condoms are the best prevention against STI transmission, but sometimes it can be challenging to get clients to understand how important they are. Knowing what to say confidently to clients can make all the difference when negotiating condom use. We’ve got some tips from sex workers on how you can do that.

Be assertive and in control. Let them know that you’ll be doing things your way and that they’ll have fun.

Remind clients how much sex you have. It’s probably a lot more than them, and with more partners.“If I use a condom with you, you can be sure I’ll use them with others.” Keep the tone light, but remain in control and in lead of what’s happening. “Relax, let me take control. I promise you’ll have fun.” It’s a lot easier to put the condom on when the client is turned on. If they are already aroused they may not want to interrupt what’s happening. “It’s time for us to have more fun. Are you excited?”

Condoms are an important safer sex tool for sex workers, however it can sometimes be difficult to get clients on board with using them. Swipe through for some sex worker advice and find more sexual health information at Red Book Online redbookonline.org.au .

This is the third in our series explaining what is wrong with the SW laws in so-called Western Australia. The laws originated from Victorian England in the 19th century and then harsh police powers were added in the year 2000.

Australian Border Force (ABF) conduct “compliance operations” in Australian workplaces. ABF claims that raiding sex industry workplaces helps to detect exploitation and trafficking. n reality, these raids target Asian migrant sex workers for visa checks, visa cancellations, detention and deportation, and disproportionately impact their human rights.

Raids traumatise and dehumanise Asian migrant sex workers They are ineffective in addressing workplace exploitation, trafficking, or visa issues within the sex industry, and they isolate workers from community. Sex workers describe intimidating behaviour from ABF officers, including carrying weapons and using militarised tactics. Raids make it hard to access the protective benefits of sex work decriminalisation. Fear of police pushes workers into isolation where they are out of touch with peer support. Workers are less likely to have access to condoms, safer sex information and testing, resulting in health harms.

The evidence demonstrates raids increase vulnerability, rather than preventing harm, and should be replaced by approaches that enhance sex workers’ agency and safety.

Today is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers It was started in the US in 2003 by the Sex Workers Outreach Project, to remember sex workers targeted by a serial killer in Washington State in the 1980s and 1990s. Their deaths were ignored by police. Every 17 December, we remember and honour sex workers who have been killed or hurt by violence.

SEX WORK IS NOT AN ENABLER OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN Our job should not be a barrier to accessing sexual violence support.

Today is the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women. Anti-violence and gender equality work in Australia often positions pornography and sex work as key drivers of violence against women. But sex workers are part of the community. What happens when we experience gender based violence in our relationships or families, if services are set up to think we are the problem?

“Public stigma, lack of anti-discrimination protections and the criminalisation of sex work make us targets. Ex-partners who have gained my trust have used these factors to justify manipulation, shaming and violence against me.” Katia Schwartz, Deaf Sex Worker and Advocate speaking on International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women 2024.

Studies have shown a correlation between anti sex work attitudes and an increase in violence against sex workers, highlighting how damaging this narrative is. Violence against sex workers is compounded by the attitudes we face when we dare to seek support and justice. Stigma from the family, sexual and domestic violence sector, health services, police, and “criminal justice systems” perpetuates the idea that violence is part of our job and we should expect it. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers, migrant workers and those living with a disability are further marginalised when accessing support or justice.

Sex worker voices must be a part of the conversation about gender based violence. We are a part of the community!

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance The day started in the US in 1999 by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith. The initial vigil honoured a transgender woman who was killed, Rita Hester, and all trans people lost to violence since her death. 27 years on, the day is honoured around the world with vigils and community solidarity. Solidarity action for allies* Learn - get the facts and fight misinformation. Upskill - find ways to make your workplace or organisation more trans affirming. Celebrate - join community days of visibility. Amplify - centre trans and gender diverse voices. Advocate - fight discrimination when you can. Donate - give to projects that support community.

Trans Day of Resistance As we mourn our trans siblings who have lost their lives we must also continue to fight for those still living. For many in the trans and gender diverse community, Trans Day of Resistance refers to rallies and other actions to protest anti-transgender violence, policy, and oppression. Many of these actions take place across unceded Australia on 22 November, and also acknowledge intersecting issues within marginalised communities.

The sex worker rights movement includes all sex workers. Our community and our allies must resist TERF (trans exclusionary feminism) and SWERF (sex worker exclusionary feminism) rhetoric.

Today we remember the trans and gender diverse community we have lost to transphobia, and stand ready to fight for those still here. Trans sex workers have always been at the forefront of the sex worker rights movement and we honour them today.

Joy was sculpted by artist Loui May in 1995. She was the world's first statue of a sex worker and was a tribute to the workers of Darlinghurst. She received mixed reactions and in 1997 was moved to Macquarie University's Sculpture Park.

After a massive community effort, Joy will return home to Darlinghurst. In 2023, sex worker activist and policy consultant Julie Bates AO, artist Loui May, and historian Dr Catherine Freyne along with sex workers and allies, launched a campaign to see Joy take pride of place back in her home neighbourhood. Thanks to funding from City of Sydney and Loui's collaboration with a local foundry, Joy has been recast in bronze. The Lord Mayor will unveil the new iteration of Joy in November. It also marks 30 years since NSW became the first jurisdiction in unceded Australia, and globally to decriminalise sex work.
