Yeah, I realized after I wrote this that there is one game I have actually played quite a bit in the last year and it's Nidhogg. My friend comes over to my studio regularly and we play long, very intense matches, haha.

Anyway. I'm not sure why but I suddenly had the urge to post about this. Maybe someone who reads this has also been having these feelings and feels a little bit better hearing about it like I did.

Maybe the desire will come back. I have a long list of games I've been meaning to play that look really cool and interesting and are made by people I respect and want to support. Part of it is maybe feeling stuck with my own work. Maybe releasing my next game will unlock something.

Maybe spending time doing these other things lets him bring something new to his work rather than letting other films influence him too much. I hope that I can do that with my work, too. I've played many games over the past decades and I know I tend to be very influenced by games I like.

He didn't say it to imply those films aren't worth his time or anything like that. He just said it very matter-of-factly. He spent most of his life watching a lot of films but now he prefers to walk or spend time with his dogs when he's not working rather than watch films.

I feel really bad about it. I don't like being a game developer who doesn't play games. Last year I went to a Q&A with one of my favorite film directors, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and he said he hadn't watched a film other than his own in 10 years and it made me feel a bit better.

I want to keep making them. It's still deeply satisfying to me to make a playful interactive thing and watch someone react to it. It's become very hard to imagine other people wanting to play my games, though, when my interest in playing games generally is mostly gone.

A weird thing happened to me recently. I've almost completely lost any desire to play video games. I haven't played a video game other than my own or games of friends and students for feedback purposes for the past year or so.

I love the skis!

Yeah, I'm doing something similar but using Jolt hinge joints. Since the movement is constrained to a 2D plane, hinge joints are enough and I found the Jolt joints to be a bit more stable than the Bullet ones. The joint limits are fixed but I'm manipulating the motor to act like a spring.
