An excerpt from a Rock Paper Shotgun article about Ryan Morris, the lead translator of FromSoft's primary localization partner Frognation, in which he describes his understanding of the period of in-game history in Dark Souls before the eruption of the First Flame. Morris is quoted saying, "We needed to conjure an image of the world in its previous static state, where concepts that we take for granted - the finite nature of life and all conceptual contrasts - were nonexistent. I think of the singularity that existed before the Big Bang."

In my 2019 analysis of Dark Souls, I interpret the pre-First Flame period of the Age of Ancients as "something akin to a pre-Big Bang singularity."

I've just learned that the lead translator who has collaborated with Miyazaki since Demon's Souls stated in 2022 he thinks of it in the exact same way:
