I really like my current job (it's still research) and I am gonna note that I 'failed' on the academic job market before winding up where I am now!

Question for anyone who makes things (professionally or personally or somewhere in between):
What would you do if you had a whole year, fully funded, with the one requirement that you NOT make anything for public consumption during that year?
The average person doesn’t give a fuck if AI has some niche use where it actually excels if used properly. In fact, that is what a tool is *supposed* to do and none of us will have a problem if it is used like that. What we see is AI fucking up real life in a massive way.
The Constitution doesn't prohibit reparations or universal healthcare or universal housing or universal free childcare or Landback.
But - and I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I don't care - if it does, we should just amend it.
People are more important than words on paper.
This deal is still going!
ugh I am sorry.
The bad news: most autistic adults who use both AAC and speech related to having intermittent, unreliable, insufficient, or expensive speech are probably NOT getting their AAC through professionals: pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/studentsympo...
I mean in my case it is not even a little bit secret but:
Identity-first language is literally why I submitted doi.org/10.1089/aut.... to @autisminadulthood.bsky.social first and not the International Society for Augmentative for Alternative Communication (ISAAC) journal first.

“we found that 78% of authors (of studies on ABA) had a conflict of interest (COI)
Some worked in ABA clinics, some offered paid consulting to other ABA providers, and some did both
Almost all papers (93%) had at least one author with these kinds of connections.”

all these universities kept axing medieval history departments as if they thought tyrants beefing with the Pope was going to stop being relevant
what's your ai strategy?
what's your quantum computing strategy?
what's your ww3 strategy?
what's your collapse of consensus reality strategy?
what's your restructuring of global supply chains strategy?
what's your pedophile billionaire cabal blackmail ring strategy?
You had one job 😫
AACs are truly magnificent tools, and they are cheaper and more flexible now than they have ever been. Everyone who needs one should have one. #Momvocate
Every day brings another org that has thrown you under the bus.
You go out (quickly, because you can't pee safely any more) and see ads for the wizardslop that is responsible.
You log on to bsky to vent and are scolded for being judgy about it.
They can't live without it. You can't live with it.
This post clearly articulates why folks MUST boycott this franchise. It is *extremely* documented what she's doing with her money.
I used to cosplay Narcissa Malfoy back in the day. I met some of my closest friends at HP cons. We're still friends. We walked away from HP entirely. Please walk away.
This is also why people should stop RTing the underlying account
AAC users deserve better: "About one person in ten who should have access to aided AAC actually does, or about one person in ten who should have access to aided AAC has been properly evaluated for it." Alyssa Hillary Zisk, for @assistiveware.bsky.social:

One thing that's been frustrating me INTENSELY this last few years is a pattern of brilliant Autistic autism researchers, doing important & fascinating work, struggling to get jobs in academia, or being pushed out of jobs they had before.
Most universities seem unable to see how valuable they are.
“It’s a circle jerk. What, I should write something more widely quotable?”—Xavier Penn
Nope, no description more succinct and more accurate applies. It is now my dearest hope to meet Mr. Penn, a real person, at one of those conferences IRL.
Autism research is a revolving door which Autistic people virtually never get to enter and allistics virtually never bother to exit. On tokenism in autism research, from autistic AAC user, side-eyer, and conference-goer Xavier Penn. New, at TPGA:

A flight-tracking account notes 35 C-17s flying out of airfields including those used by Delta Force (Bragg), SEAL Team 6 (Oceana), two of the three Ranger battalions (HAAF and JBLM), and the 160th SOAR.
Looks a lot like staging JSOC in case it’s ordered to do the uranium recovery mission in Iran.
There was ONE ATC in the tower at LGA during last night's crash.
ONE ATC, at LGA!, dealing w ALL air and ground traffic, including a plane filling w a strange smell and no gate to return to.
The Pentagon wants $200B for a vanity war, but our ATC towers are empty.
Budgets are moral documents.

i uh, am hoping it's not the dam, for obvious reasons
If you’re interested in this kind of contextual work, I teamed up with the wonderful @asoskic.bsky.social for a chapter that captures some of these perspectives: “That finding may not apply here! Lessons from teaching developmental psychology in non-WEIRD contexts”
teachpsych.org/ebooks/teach...
Here’s my deal. Somewhere between 5% and 15% of my class have no (or very little) imagery. There is a whole chapter of the textbook that describes effects that make zero sense to a LARGE chunk of our students! I can’t teach this subject ‘straight’ without addressing this gap first.
So why do we do this task? We’re learning cognitive psychology not individual differences… or are we?
We are about to learn that imagery is involved in memory, mental rotation tasks and mental ‘walks’. We learn that imagery can be mistaken for vision and triggers similar neural activations…
We have got to be willing to try hard and do real things.
Real things always fall short in some way. Cynicism falls a lot shorter.
As it sinks in this energy crisis is neither temporary nor contained, it’s worth repeating:
The US can’t promise to stand down while Trump leads, bc the US can’t make promises, full stop.
Trump is incapable of honoring promises. US media & Dems choose to pretend otherwise. Iran cannot afford to.
