I think for a very beginner, gamemaker will be easier, but as was noted, godot will be a more general engine and better for longterm skill building.

I love godot and it might be fun for some to explore, but it's a full fledged engine with a much steeper learning curve. There are some third parties that let you build on it with visual coding that can make it more accessible.

Scratch - Imagine, Program, Share Scratch is a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations.

What about scratch.mit.edu? Or for visual novels, inkle writer is probably the easiest, followed by twine, and renpy is a bit more complicated.

Hey congrats, that's a big deal!

It took metacrit 2 weeks or so to evaluate godot and make a decision, iirc. They seem happy with the results. It seems like someone with experience can figure out whether it will serve a reasonable time. And folks without experience will benefit from exploring any engine.

Godot is probably more flexible than it seems at first.

For example many experienced coders always hook up signals through code, rather than the ui. But having that option makes it a lot easier for people with almost no experience coding to build a game, too.

Often the features that make it easier for new users are best ignored by experienced users.

So, don't register globals in the ui for example. You don't have to.

I think that, almost always you should go about it as you see fit, rather than interpreting it as godot "wanting" you to do it a certain way. I know the ui may give that impression, but just because it makes a path available, doesn't mean it's the right way for you.

Oh I wonder what version that was added? I guess it's possible I've just always ignored it.

Please look forward to it!

I meant this class docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/cl... introduced in 4.5, but I had never really looked at it. My custom logger writes to the console with print rich. This is a bit different. But because of it, I had to rename my class.

I wonder, does godot's new built in logger support print_rich? (surprised if it doesn't.) The first thing I did with my homegrown logging class when this became available was let each object type pick it's own color when logging. Very helpful for distinguishing lines from different sources.

Also as grom pointed out, your godot problem isn't a godot problem. It's a you problem. Don't complain incorrectly and publicly about something if you don't want to hear actual responses.

You don't understand bluesky. If you don't want people interested in a topic to see your post on it, don't use the word that lists are set up to watch.

And if you're afraid of people engaging you in discussion on your public posts, maybe don't make public posts. Acting like this is super rude.

Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with gamemaker. I think it's not just 2d? Its just (as far as I know) the best option for those with less coding experience. Coding in godot doesn't make you bend over backwards for basic stuff, but you can't avoid it without plugins.
