Agree- and that they know that somewhere subconsciously, so their lives are a desperate clamour to prove how important and powerful they are because deep down they probably know they’re feckless little shits.

This is such a glorious piece of music, sung by Asha Bhosle, who died today 🇮🇳

you know the way "why did the Roman Empire fall" and "what are the causes of the First World War" are big questions that sort of function like Rorsharch tests, allowing people to debate ultimately inexplicable moments in history? "Why did no one stop Trump" a decent future shout for the third.

I know we've all seen it already. But I honestly think this is the defining moment of our time. Past generations couldn't have believed it would happen. Future generations won't believe it could have happened. But here we are, bang in the moment. Lucky, lucky us.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social this is basically the whole plot of the film Wag the Dog where the president of America goes to war to distract from personal sex scandal.

Also- all original Britons died in the ice age. Wait til they find out that literally everyone here is descended from an immigrant. 🤯😂

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

I genuinely don’t think it would be a nice life. Lots of stuff but very little genuine connection. It’s like they’ve misunderstood what brings contentment. Wherever they go, whatever they wear, whatever car they drive, they’re still them. They can’t escape that.

We’re only 10 days into 2026 and it feels pretty extreme and hopeless already but I’m seeing glimmers of what’s possible as people’s sadness and fear turns into focussed distain and a renewed willingness to not just react but to act strategically

If you’re feeling dysregulated, that means you care. Worry about those who don’t feel it

Rather than accept a pint for my birthday, I’d like to ask 4 quickies

Next week, I’m going to interview Music Declares Emergency on the Drowned in Sound podcast to discuss their new message, which we need right now: Hope Over Fear - a project to fund action hubs in grassroots music venues

1) Go treat yourself to some of their fantastic merch with slogans to live by like Another World Is Possible. This follows on from their brilliant No Music On A Dead Planet campaign

A lot of what’s occurring in the world right now from Ukraine to Venezuela is about extracting from our natural world. It’s about minerals to power AI and land grabs for fossil fuel that pollutes the planet but also to make the 3000 billionaires even richer

2) Speak their language and join the various boycotts of platforms like Spotify when lots of more ethical alternatives exist (I met some lovely researchers and experts who explained those alts in recent DiS podcasts if you wanna listen in)

3) Musicians and people who follow me who work in music can do simple things to push back like agreeing to give a small percent to Brian Eno’s EarthPercent, who fund the work of some amazing orgs including lawyers at Client Earth who take on governments and corporations, often holding them to existing agreements and laws or creating new ones. Musicians could also support projects like Sounds Right where you credit nature as a collaborator and a small royalty trickles through

4) You can also choose to support independent media with your time, attention, and ideally some funds. Whether that’s music blogs like mine or investigative reporters or emerging media orgs and creators

It’s my birthday. 🎂

Thanks for the kind messages thus far. I wanted to ask 4 quick things of you today.

There’s so much more I wanna say but know this is already a bit long. Don’t be a stranger. Bye for now.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Just listening on catch up- possibly the racial slurs story isn’t getting so much traction amongst his supporters is that a lot of them concur. They’d prob be more influenced by the question of the Russian interference as that would seem to them more overtly anti -patriotic.

75% of Reform UK’s donations have come from just three rich men Calls grow for donation caps as Democracy for Sale research reveals that three-quarters of Reform’s funding comes from a trio of wealthy donors

🔴 Nigel Farage’s Reform is more reliant on super-rich backers than any major party in modern British political history

75% of *all* Reform donations *ever* have come from just three rich men

Is this what democracy looks like?

This reminds me of my favourite little factoid about hedgehogs. They used to be called 'urchins' in English, so a sea urchin was a sea hedgehog. In Welsh, a hedgehog is a draenog, and a sea urchin is draenog môr... a sea hedgehog.

If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

It’s obviously pissing in the wind to point it out, but I’m not sure how this gets fixed unless people stop using TikTok, which is the same as saying there’s no way of fixing it.

The minute we gave up control of who we see on our feeds to big, amoral companies, this was inevitable.
