The tech industry props up the richest people on the planet and pays far less than its fair share of taxes. It can absolutely afford its own R&D. But instead, it’s effectively hijacked our public science infrastructure because having more wealth than anyone could ever spend is still not enough.

transmisogyny is just misogyny with extra steps. it was always about controlling how we define women so that they fit a profile consistent with cishetero men's desires and "gender critical" feminists played right into it. now any woman who doesn't look "feminine enough" is in the crosshairs.

imagine taking even one moment to consider why women from Afghanistan might want to come to the UK to pursue education and concluding that it’s definitely for scam reasons

We compiled regional datasets to generate a comprehensive global inventory of lake-terminating glaciers. While these glaciers account for only ~1% of glaciers, they hold ~10% of global ice area. Lake interactions could therefore be significant in shaping glacier change in the decades to come!

I remember a hockey team from a certain place I grew up (239 m a.s.l.), having been unexpectedly swept by UAF in Fairbanks (136 m a.s.l.) that weekend, blaming their poor performance on the "high altitude".

Opinion: It’s not you, it’s the glacier
A field guide to coping with a breakup measured in 160 feet per year.
As someone experiencing a fraught relationship with a different retreating glacier I find Naomi Klouda’s essay in ADN delightful and affirming! Read!

In addn to the “opportunity theft,” as Sonja 🤌 calls it, I’m struck by how this prof thinks of grad students: purely as cheap labor to serve him. Zero acknwlwgmt of the ethical / intellectual responsibility or *joy* of sharing your knwledg with others, learning *from* them, supporting the next gen.

I assumed that the reason that Fairbanks had like no building code enforcement is because it was the wild west, but apparently everywhere is the wild west?

Historian of French Revolution here to say that in periods like this, squeamish compromisers do as much to drive radicalization as do ideologues. If you keep making excuses for the unfit king, eventually folks come for you and him.

This is honestly the treatment Trump voters should get in the U.S. too. Don't let them try to hide from the effects of their choice. It's always the people who believe in the worst things that get mad when someone "makes things political."

I have so many examples of students questioning whether I know enough about a topic to teach it. I asked in faculty meeting "who has been questioned whether they are qualified to teach a class?" The women raised their hands, the men didn't. It's definitely rooted in sexism and racism.

This is not just cursed, its monstrous. The digital resurrection of a historian who died in January of this year, all so Grammarly can get some more clicks and engagement from students and/or scholars and/or others.
It feels so wrong on so many levels, these ghosts enslaved to AI forever
