Day one of commuting into the office. After a lifetime of dreaming about living and working in New York City, I’m finally in that timeline. ✨

Today my 7-year-old took his $5 from his grandma for our road trip, walked into a gas station in Iowa, and bought himself a 5-hour energy. We caught him before he could guzzle it down, but I can’t stop laughing about both the selection and the fact that the cashier didn’t blink an eye.

The Mamdani Era Begins His opponents tried to smear him for his youth, inexperience, and leftist politics. But New Yorkers didn’t want a hardened political insider to be mayor—they wanted Zohran Mamdani.

While campaigning, Zohran Mamdani frequently noted that New York is the richest city in the richest country in the history of the world, and that its government could do more for the people who live here. Tonight, he was elected mayor.

Portland Prepares for Invasion The Trump Administration, looking for another TV-ready fight in Oregon, is ready to sic the National Guard on the city’s inflatable-costumed protesters.

Outside of the ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, one can find some protesters in inflatable costumes—frogs, a unicorn, a butterfly picking up a cigarette off the asphalt. The chaos Donald Trump keeps pointing to is harder to find.

Sitting in a packed airport waiting for a delayed flight. I plopped down next to a woman with her knees curled up, nose in a book. Realized it was Ferrante’s “The Story of a New Name,” the same very book I’m reading right now. I pulled it out of my purse to show her and we had a moment.

Kate Berlant and Jacqueline Novak had the crowd rolling at #NewYorkerFest. Seeing them tonight was a good reminder that the best friendships are deeply creative, full of serendipitous discovery through riffing and improvisation.

Picked up these two at Powell’s today. It feels like time to finally read “My Brilliant Friend,” and I’m a big Wesley Morris fan.

Portland is a beautiful, vibrant city full of some of the kindest, most welcoming people you’ll meet anywhere, not to mention some incredible activists and artists. Fuck this guy.

Tonight’s overindulgence at Powell’s. I don’t need new books to add to my TBR stack, but then again, I do, I do!

When you're being inundated with all this Fourth of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.

Sometimes I am in such an acerbic mood that nothing will help but Fiona Apple, on LOUD. Begging this woman for a new album to get us through 2025.

Police on horseback, accompanied by officers in riot gear, watch a large crowd of people. One says, “The protesters seem to be doing some sort of joyful synchronized dance. Is it time to call in the Marines?”

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

A herring is a fish.

When a herring is preserved by salting and smoking, it turns red and smells.

It's so pungent that it's a great diversion to distract hunting dogs from their trail.

Now, a ‘red herring’ refers to anything that diverts attention from the issue at hand.
