Today my 7-year-old took his $5 from his grandma for our road trip, walked into a gas station in Iowa, and bought himself a 5-hour energy. We caught him before he could guzzle it down, but I can’t stop laughing about both the selection and the fact that the cashier didn’t blink an eye.

Portland Prepares for Invasion The Trump Administration, looking for another TV-ready fight in Oregon, is ready to sic the National Guard on the city’s inflatable-costumed protesters.

Outside of the ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, one can find some protesters in inflatable costumes—frogs, a unicorn, a butterfly picking up a cigarette off the asphalt. The chaos Donald Trump keeps pointing to is harder to find.

Sitting in a packed airport waiting for a delayed flight. I plopped down next to a woman with her knees curled up, nose in a book. Realized it was Ferrante’s “The Story of a New Name,” the same very book I’m reading right now. I pulled it out of my purse to show her and we had a moment.

Picked up these two at Powell’s today. It feels like time to finally read “My Brilliant Friend,” and I’m a big Wesley Morris fan.

Portland is a beautiful, vibrant city full of some of the kindest, most welcoming people you’ll meet anywhere, not to mention some incredible activists and artists. Fuck this guy.

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.
