i think it's fair to say that we, as a collective, have given corporations *way* too much power and presence in our daily lives. it's time to show them that we don't need them & start using our skills to take care of each other
Great news! The Baltimore Museum of Art is taking âAmy Sherald: American Sublime,â which was originally scheduled to take place at the National Portrait Gallery. artbma.org/exhibition/a...
amanda seyfried seems so incredibly cool, i love her vibe & want the best for her
Offe Market is having a sitewide 20% off sale on their off-price, name-brand merchandise! I discovered this store last year and love their approach to sustainable shopping.
Use the code BYESUMMER20 at offe.market
& because the article couldn't be bothered to publish a photo of the Chappell Roan look they used to get people to read this, here's the look by Zimbalist:
Lycra is beginning to experiment with corn-based textiles, Adidas & Hermes are testing out mushroom leather, but we know that the real sustainable ingenuity has always come from independent designers like Caroline Zimbalist.
Incredible video from @jillianeve.bsky.social about the history of American-produced #textiles, and yet another avenue upon which #FashionIsPolitical
This is what the #Etsy energy is looking like over on Threads. People are *not* having it, however @/socialworkispolitical makes a great point about confederate flag merch & other hate-oriented merchandise.
Boosting this request to talk to #Etsy defectors today after several shops threatened or went through with closing their doors last night upon discovering "Alligator Alcatraz" merch being offered on the platform.
Please get in touch with if you're down to tell me your Etsy woes! #handmade #etsyshop
Ooooh I might have to hit this up!
It's so cool to "meet" the people whose lives have been changed by NOVICA's program. Like Buana:
"Since joining [NOVICA] in 2006, a lot has changed in my life. I now own a house⌠and this has been completely life-changing. One thing I can do to repay this is to give you my very best work."
Happy Birthday, NOVICA! A #fairtrade B-corp that sources #handmade goods for body, home, & life from all over the world - complete with stories of the artisans who crafted them! They're offering big discounts to celebrate their 26th birthday, and as a customer I can't recommend their store enough!
I have a big interest in talking to #Etsy defectors - people who once used Etsy to sell their handmade goods, but have since left due for reasons like community culture, algorithm beefs, and/or predatory fees.
I would love to hear from any #handmade #makers who have left Etsy! Tell me your story!
Tailored Union, a sock company that partnered with indie artists to create capsule collections of beautifully designed socks, has decided to close its doors. :( I found them too late - but not too late to get 50% off of their remaining stock!

I've been wanting to try my hand at sashiko, a Japanese visible mending technique. Using a kit from Socorro Society on TikTok, I finally finished my first patch on the elbow of my denim jacket. It took around 4 hours I think. I'm really happy with it. Nice to try new things.
đđŻ The Honeybee Bandana has arrived in studio, screenprinted to perfection, with bees and mÄnuka flowers in vermilion red across a turmeric backdrop.
The original artwork for this design took over 60 hours of detailed handdrawing, and I'm so pleased with how it turned out. pepperraccoon.com
I wrote about those TikToks from Chinese factories that claim to "cut out the middleman" for Lululemon, Birkenstocks, and more. They're designed to entice US shoppers who are nervous about tariffs and used to low prices. Most claims are also probably bullshit.

Excellent piece today by @amyodell.bsky.social in her BackRow substack (a must-follow IMO) on greenwashing, GenZ's interest in ethical consumerism, & the lack of data backing up big brands' sustainability claims. amyodell.substack.com/p/how-sustai...

Photo of two light tabby kittens in a basket of hay with the copy "Cute kittens want to talk to you about SHEIN."
Photo of a cute fluffy peach-colored kitten with the following copy: SHEIN's growth and impending IPO is a bad thing for everyone on this planet. In 2024, its sales grew to $38 billion. We are not picking on SHEIN when we talk about the ethical/environmental issues related to its business model. Conversations about SHEIN start with the knowledge that most mass retailers rely on human exploitation and overconsumption. We are not being xenophobic when we talk about SHEIN. We are not shaming people for shopping from SHEIN. We are talking about SHEIN because its success is pushing the fashion industry to make clothing a lot faster and more quasi-disposable. It is making the problem of fast fashion much, much worse.

Photo of two kittensâone a fluffy white kitten, the other a fluffy black kittenâwith the following copy: SHEIN steals art and designs from artists, designers, and brands of all sizes around the world. And yeah, that destroys small businesses and widens wealth inequality.
I was shocked and disappointed to learn this week that Vancouver Fashion Week is showcasing SHEIN... not as a threat to our planet with its overproduction and ever-growing climate impact. .
NOPE....Vancouver Fashion Week is featuring SHEIN as a DESIGNER.
Speechless.
Seriously.
WTF.
A photo of a peach fluffy kitten pasted on a piece of notebook paper, with the copy âThe future is secondhand: tips and tricks for shopping secondhand online.â
A photo of an orange and white fluffy kitten pasted on a piece of notebook paper with this copy: We live in a golden era of buying secondhand clothing online! Letâs be honest...for many of us, time is a luxury we just donât have. Shopping online can be a lot more efficient, but it carries the risk of items not fitting/suiting you. For successful online secondhand shopping, you need one very important item...A TAPE MEASURE! As a person who worked in fashion for a long time and has seen how the size on most tags is pretty irrelevant...you should avoid buying anything without clear measurements (unless you know your size in that item).
following copy: A tape measure will set you up for success! Knowing the measurements that work best for you in the chest, waist, hips, arm opening, length, etc., will prevent a lot of disappointment on your end! There are two ways to go about this: Measure your body. There is an art to this and (yay!) there are a lot of tutorials online. When youâre shopping for an item, always ensure that the measurements of the garment will allow for (what I call) âliving room,â i.e., being able to move around and live your life comfortably! Measure a similar garment that you own and love. I tend to go this route more often because it allows for that âliving room.â Furthermore, I struggle with a really unhealthy relationship with my body and food, and measurements and scales tend to lead me to intrusive thoughts and self harm. This is a safer route for me.
photo of two kittens (one a white fluffy kitten, the other a black kitten) pasted on notebook paper with the following copy: Measurements matter! When it comes to clothing, shoes, accessories, etcâŚAlways check the measurements for items for sale online. If they are not available or seem wrong, either reach out to the seller for more info, or skip the item altogether. Also, let me give you a piece of advice that I have learned the hard way: if you reach out to a seller asking for measurements (or really asking any other question), and they donât respondâŚ.this is the red flag to NOT buy this item. Why? Well, it could be a scam listing. The person may have listed it a long time ago and since then has forgotten about or even doesnât know where it is. Or they may not even be active on that platform. Knowing the measurements of an item that isnât clothing is just as important. A bag that looks like a tote-size in the photos might actually be a clutch!
The most sustainable clothes (and really everything)? Stuff that already exists! And one part of REDUCE REFUSE RESIST (and tbh the entire slow fashion way of life) is shopping secondhand first! Meaning: looking for something secondhand first, before buying it brand new.
