I lost two friends to pancreatic cancer. It happens so fast. This is such a miracle!

I swear if the fate of democracy turns out to hinge on some overconfident very special 9-yr-old I'm gonna flip
I get your point, but in an era when professors I know receive death threats after someone takes their words out of context, it troubles me.
We're not really gonna let polymarket replace actual polling are we? People know that they're not the same, right? Right???
I'm convinced that this "but what about the boys!" thinking is why McDonald's started selling an adult Kpop demon hunter meal with a collectible card instead of a kids meal.
Charu Das was such a welcoming person, a great interview and a strong advocate for his religious community. I met him as a teenager attending the Festival of Colors and interviewed him in adulthood as a journalist. My condolences to his family and friends: www.fox13now.com/news/local-n... #Utah
Stop de Kindermoord
In Korea, when the president declared martial law after midnight and erected barricades in Seoul, congressional reps from all parties ran into the streets, yanked ak47s from the army at the barricades, broke down the locked door to Congress, repealed the martial law order, and arrested the president
My advisor: don't write your dissertation on that
Me, an expert: I just think this is gonna be big someday
It hurts but it's also a relief that Europe is standing up to him.
these are exactly the stakes! embracing trump’s view would be embracing the cramped vision of freedom and belonging that we fought a civil war to banish to the ash heap of history
Consistent community gathering over content. Probably a good change!
Congrats! Excited to read!
RELIGION UNBUNDLED
Excited that this paper proposing a new paradigm for the sociology of US religion @ruthbraunstein.bsky.social, @jlkucinskas.bsky.social, @bsteens.bsky.social and I have been working on has been accepted for publication in the American Sociological Review.

Time to celebrate. Good riddance to this heinous effort!
The Utah GOP-backed citizen ballot initiative to repeal Prop. 4 will NOT be on the November ballot after enough voters pulled their signatures: www.fox13now.com/news/politic... #utpol #Utah
My latest article is online now at American Sociological Review: “Kinship Interlocks.” It’s about how some elite families manage to stay rich and powerful for many generations while others don’t. 🧵 (1/16)
Prop 4 repeal update: After two days of SD15 holding steady, there were 34 signature removals today. The margin stands at 68 in the critical tipping-point district (meaning 69 removals and the Prop 4 repeal fails to make the ballot). Deadline is April 23.
Fascinating new study about men’s friendships.
There’s a lot of evidence here that the “male loneliness crisis” is actually a white, wealthy man problem. Other men are building friendships with similar depth to women’s friendships.
The real tragedy is this used to be one of the most respected journals in sociology.
On a day of much media news, very excited to share this chat w/the CAPTivated podcast team on @bishopofwestsaxons.bsky.social and my new work on right-wing media.
Rebuilding democracy requires aggressive anti-trust enforcement.
This sums up Cox perfectly: he knows what's wrong but goes with it anyway and publicly hopes things magically turn out okay. Leadership!

Shared ancestry and convergentevolution may generate similarities in preference across speciesand underlie Darwin’s conjecture that some animals “havenearly the same taste for the beautiful as we have.” In this study,we show that humans share acoustic preferences with a rangeof animals, that the strength of human preferences correlateswith that in other animals, and that humans respond fasterwhen in agreement with animals. Furthermore, we foundgreatest agreement in preference for adorned, ancestral, andlower-frequency sounds. humans’ music listening experiencewas associated with preferences. These results are consistentwith theories arguing that biases in processing sculpt acousticpreferences, and they confirm Darwin’s century-old hunchabout the conservation of aesthetics in nature
out now in Science: @loganjames.bsky.social collected pairs of sounds in 16 species where we *know* which sound is more attractive (to that species)
he played them to ppl on themusiclab.org, asking, in each pair, which was nicer. humans agreed w other animals

The "peacemaker" language--pulling from the Nelson sermon--is so off-putting too. I hope it's the off ramp of his political career.
I think I remember this at ASA. Congrats!
I have an R joke but it needs some tidying up
Utah voters: your efforts to remove signatures from the Prop 4 repeal efforts are WORKING. Keep telling your family, friends, and neighbors especially in the following Senate Districts: 8, 10, 12, 15, and 17. Here’s how to remove signatures: protectutahvoters.com
