For multiple complicated reasons, I not only didn't see anything of myself in her, but it never occurred to me to look.

The first trans woman I ever met was in high school. I was the sole young person on the board of directors of a an LGBT-inclusion focused nonprofit in the United Methodist Church. We had no trans folks, and were underinformed on trans issues. She came to speak with us about her experiences.
