I think classifieds were esp. vulnerable once enough folks were online, as Craigslist(ings) cost less, did more, were no more work, had more reach & reached folks w/ more disposable income.
At least, that's what I infer. I imagine that you & @craignewmark.bsky.social know rather more of the story.
