“Easy divisions and stark binaries make no sense in Ireland now... Any opinion on this matter requires nuanced consideration.”
In the @nybooks.com, Colm Tóibín reviews For and Against a United Ireland by O’Toole & McBride, a measured and compelling take on a complex debate📖

Wrapping up, both note the positive reaction to the book both here in the United States and at home.
Fintan attributes this to the form of the book - it does not tell people what to think, but invites them to consider all arguments.
@ria.ie @ndirishstudies.bsky.social
Both agree education is another critical topic. Sam outlines how educational opportunity can level the playing field whilst Fintan highlights how education and economic issues go hand in hand - a lack of university places leads to a brain drain in the North.
Sam reminds us it is difficult to compare data on both healthcare systems.
Here at @bc-irish-studies.bsky.social
healthcare is discussed as a core point in the debate:
Fintan reminds us that ARINS research highlights health as the most important subject for survey respondents. He suggests a process of improving healthcare for all on the island in the first instance.
🧵
Discussing arguments AGAINST Irish unity Fintan focuses on economic cost - many would vote in favour but change their minds if this means higher taxes.
Sam notes that we can’t ignore the possibility of violence, but nor can we
‘say that he with the biggest gun gets to decide the future…’
We are delighted to be at @bostoncollege.bsky.social this afternoon for another For and Against conversation.
With huge thanks to Mary C Murphy, Guy Beiner and their teams.
