I met with @neilmackay.bsky.social for his big read in today’s @heraldscotland.bsky.social about ending child poverty, the role of public attitudes, the need for a baby guarantee and harnessing the power of children & families

It is a political choice to plunge 50,000 more children into poverty by the end of this parliament, as a result of the health and disability benefit cuts. This news will be devastating for families across the country struggling to make ends meet.

Infuriating watching politicians try to explain away an increase in children in poverty. A values led, compassionate and informed approach would have dismissed any increase in child poverty as both indefensible and untenable.

We acknowledge the slight reduction in child poverty however, figures remain significantly above the interim target. @ScotGov must do more to prioritise ending child poverty to meet targets. Too many children in Scotland are still growing up in poverty 👇 www.aberlour.org.uk/news-item/ab...

We also need to do more to create flexible jobs for parents, increase the supply of affordable childcare and roll out community based family services that support children to get a decent start & set them up for a better future (4/4)

Social security, esp the SCP, is supporting families. There is no running away from the fact this essential public service is needed & should go further. It’s the backbone to a comprehensive plan to end child poverty (3/4)

It is welcome to see child poverty reducing for the first time in years, especially in the face of rising poverty across the UK. Things have turned in the right direction. It gives us hope that policy & political choices in Scotland are working (2/4)

We are deeply disappointed that the interim child poverty targets have been missed. Too many families are still struggling to make ends meet. We simply need Holyrood & Westminster to do more for children (1/4)

🚨 BREAKING: Child poverty has hit a new record high in the UK.

These figures are a source of national shame. The rise in child poverty to 4.5 million is a direct consequence of political choices.

We fear child poverty levels will rise as a direct result of the welfare reforms announced today.

870k children live in families that receive PIP & 290k of these are already in poverty.

A reduction in income for families with a disabled parent means more children will suffer.

🧵The First Minister is right - we predict the gap will grow between child poverty rates in Scotland and England and Wales - to around 10 percentage points.

The gap is largely as a result of the Child Payment and the commitment to end the two child limit.

Shows the power of social security. 1/3

Why is there less free childcare for under-threes in Scotland? In England, Fiona would qualify for 15 hours of funded childcare per week, cutting down on the extra care she needs to pay for.

I had the pleasure of speaking about early learning and childcare in Scotland. We know that cost and lack of flexibility is still a major barrier for work, particularly for mothers. High quality childcare that flexes around the needs of low income families is needed: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
