Mary Steenburgen, Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, Veronica Cartwright, John Belushi—and the ever-reliable Tracey Walter, too! (all comparatively restrained…)

Featuring “Zor and Zam” from the bonkers final episode (The Frodis Caper) of their then-recently-canceled television series…
Jack sure lets ‘er rip in his third film as director, “Goin’ South”!
London After Midnight, Jodorowsky’s “Dune” book, The Beatles’ “Carnival Of Light”, and this…to quote Nathan Johnson, “that’s all I need”…
The “Un-Men”!!!
The “perceived” late Princess Diana was set to join Marvel’s X-Statix—Peter Milligan & Mike Allred’s meta mutant satire—until the expected protests. She was rewritten & redrawn as Henrietta Hunter, a deceased UK pop star…
Marvel chickened out on Lady Di, too…
“You have the temerity to say that I'm talking to you out of jejunosity? I am one of the most june people in all of the Russias!”
Don’t forget that in the previous year, Allen stunned us all as Travis Bickle:

Even Swampy fears The Floronic Man!
This one’s got “Fireflies”!
Does this one have the marimba version of “Out Of Time”?
I had this one-sheet on my wall throughout high school in the 80s…
(“Frankenstein Alive Alive”, written by Steve Niles, was published in fragmented serial form by Dark Horse over many years, and was completed by Kelly Jones when Wrightson passed away b/f completion)
Speaking of Berni—and many days all I do is speak of Berni—a scream-minder that his adaptation of “Frankenstein”, which inspired the del Toro film & was long OOP, has been reissued in an affordable paperback but—alert!—is NOT complete (Netflix sticker warning!) Try to find the 2008 or 2020 reissues!
(I could improvise a TED talk on that Toth cover!)
EC’s legendary run was rivalled only by Warren publications in the late 60s to early 80s, when b/c the titles were classified as “magazines” & not “comics”, writers & artists were able to evade the bluenoses at the Comics Code Authority & ramp up the violence & nudity! These volumes are a must!
I’m easy bait for this so I’ll pick it up, but the original tie-in for the 1982 film still reigns—thanks to the gorgeous art of the late (but immortal nonetheless) Berni Wrightson (the faux comic art in the film was rendered by EC’s Jack Kamen)
There’s a great Peter Cook bit about that…

It’s a shame Korak and Korrek never teamed up!
Booji Boy sticking a fork in the toaster—larger than life!
Ugh—that Live Aid/Bowie-Jagger video played before screenings in some Canadian cinemas for what seemed like years! You’d plead w/ the universe that it wouldn’t be next after the trailers! What the hell did we ever do…?
I have somehow gone thru life w/o reading the novel, seeing the film, or hearing anything from the soundtrack—a rare perk for being raised in the wilds of Northern Ontario! I will thank the author for inspiring “Lesbian Seagull” from Beavis & Butthead (later re-recorded by Englebert Humperdink)
I’m sure Lloyd Kaufman is already on it…
I recently revisited the theatrical cut on Criterion, having only seen a network tv edit when I was a teen. I thought it was prescient (overused, sorry!) ala 70s Crichton: Proteus is a psycho Alexa & a sorta reverse-transhumanist. That geodesic device that kills Gerrit Graham is pretty freaky…
Pfft—when prices get too high north of the 49th we go big or go home! Witness 1981’s “The Last Chase”:oil is rare, personal vehicles illegal but Lee Majors is gonna race his Porsche anyway—even if Burgess Meredith pursues him in a fighter jet! It’s like “Duel”, but—actually it’s not like Duel at all
