To the first hearers of that story, the shocking lesson would have been exactly the opposite: that God does not need us to kill anyone, and faithfulness means not looking to violence to appease God.
To some people reading the story of Abraham and Isaac today, the shocking lesson is that God might ask us to kill someone, and faithfulness means being willing to kill.
