a pair of fearsome labokiwi attack a trio of tyrannosaurids and a large ceratopsid; the backdrop is a blood-red sky, appropriate for the carnage soon to be unleashing by the terrifying labokiwi
a skeletal also by hodari showing the known elements of labokiwi. it is extremely fragmentary
wow! a new study by glup and shitto has recovered the alleged mexican tyrannosaur labocania aguillonae as a giant early palaeognath with teeth, hereby renamed labokiwi aguillonae! mind-blowing stuff 🤯🦖 doi.org/10.1016/j.oneear.2025.101314

An illustration of the two-legged meat eating dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus rex.
I’ve recently finished a number of commissions and felt it was time to make something for my own enjoyment.
#Tyrannosaurus is always a joy.

The retro skin flap is inspired by findings from Sereno et al. (2026), showing hadrosaur soft tissue ornamentation could be much more diverse than anticipated.

There are two conflicting principles in biology. 1) Parsimony, as in the simplest solution is likely to be correct, and 2) Evolution is bonkers and sometimes makes no “logical” sense.

It’s on the off chance that these and other structures produced by ornithischians are a convergent feature rather than being the same structure as theropod feathers. It’s the same reason why we’ve been waffling on whether pycnofibers = feathers.
But IMO, they’re probably just feathers.

Here's a T. Rex bored to death trying to bite their own tail. My partner asked me to animate it in stop motion, after she watched a video about the very important topic of "could T. Rex chew its own tail like a dog". The puppet is still a work in progress 🦖

This is why scientists will cushion statements about animal behavior with “typically” or “usually.”
All it takes is one individual to shake things up.

I need to finish all episodes of the new Walking with Dinosaurs, but so far it’s got quite a range of highs and lows.
And also…chat, is there perhaps a faint echo of a paintpaddock piece in contemporary paleomedia?

An illustration of an orca, a black and white dolphin. This individual was known as Keiko. His tall dorsal fin is flopped over on one side.
Many of my colleagues view the story and fate of #Keiko the orca as a failure. I think this underplays the effort and hard work of many smart, passionate people.
We learned a lot about cetacean rehabilitation. Keiko got the dignity of passing away in his home waters, far from his tiny tank.
