An illustration of the two-legged meat eating dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus rex.

I’ve recently finished a number of commissions and felt it was time to make something for my own enjoyment.

#Tyrannosaurus is always a joy.

Paleontology has an Epstein problem. Women in the field say it's a symptom of a deeper misogyny | CBC Radio The names of hundreds of scientists have appeared in the Epstein files, including prominent dinosaur researchers. As the paleontology community reckons with the fallout of these revelations, women in ...

A few weeks ago CBC reporter Sheena Goodyear reached out to me for comment on the new Spinosaurus paper. I said I couldn’t, because of Epstein connection Nathan Myhrvold’s involvement with it. We got to talking about how paleontology - especially dinosaur research- remains hostile to women. 🧪

There are two conflicting principles in biology. 1) Parsimony, as in the simplest solution is likely to be correct, and 2) Evolution is bonkers and sometimes makes no “logical” sense.

It’s on the off chance that these and other structures produced by ornithischians are a convergent feature rather than being the same structure as theropod feathers. It’s the same reason why we’ve been waffling on whether pycnofibers = feathers.

But IMO, they’re probably just feathers.

Here's a T. Rex bored to death trying to bite their own tail. My partner asked me to animate it in stop motion, after she watched a video about the very important topic of "could T. Rex chew its own tail like a dog". The puppet is still a work in progress 🦖

This is why scientists will cushion statements about animal behavior with “typically” or “usually.”

All it takes is one individual to shake things up.

I need to finish all episodes of the new Walking with Dinosaurs, but so far it’s got quite a range of highs and lows.

And also…chat, is there perhaps a faint echo of a paintpaddock piece in contemporary paleomedia?

Many of my colleagues view the story and fate of #Keiko the orca as a failure. I think this underplays the effort and hard work of many smart, passionate people.

We learned a lot about cetacean rehabilitation. Keiko got the dignity of passing away in his home waters, far from his tiny tank.
