Hey everyone. We received some - just... frankly? - shit news over the weekend. Nothing truly tragic, no ones dying, the relationship is still strong, etc, but just very heartachingly unfortunate news. Now I feel that I must preface, please read through the entire post. I understand the news and the reasons behind it will cause certain reactions, particularly with people who are closer to us, but please, PLEASE, remember that the internet is a public space. DO NOT say or do anything that could potentially get you in legal or physical trouble!!!! If you get yourself into a situation that could lead to your arrest, I will be extremely upset with you! That said, on Monday morning, Taka's visa application for the short 5-day visit to the US was DENIED by the US government.

Taka filed his paperwork correctly. We did not say anything of the wedding, because we realized we likely wouldn't be able to legally marry in the US, so this was going to just be a purely symbolic ceremony to enjoy with friends and family here in the US, with intention to marry properly later when I go down to him in Brazil next year. So on the paperwork, the only thing we listed was the very real convention we intend to also attend that weekend (and the original reason for bringing everyone together in the first place). We provided them with the airBnB booking details and the airplane tickets (which included the return date flight!) all of which line up with the listed convention. So all the paperwork requested and then some. He did all this prep work, paid the dues, we agonized over his outfit and proper way to present himself like it was a business interview here in the US as he'd be meeting with US politicians more or less, ran through all the typical questions... And the woman who did the interview asked him 2 questions and denied him in less than 2 minutes without ever looking up from the screen to see Taka's face.

The paper Taka was handed concerning the rejection was not the most helpful in determining what specifically more could be done. The best we could figure was the line entailing something to the effect of not sufficient evidence of intended reason for visit. It appears, much like the current "pause" on immigration applications from many South American countries including Brazil, that they are worried that Taka may simply "stay in the US" and "become a drain on US public resources" which is of course blatantly untrue and is outlined particularly by the return plane ticket and hotel stay that does in fact end the same day as the plane departure which all coincide with the intended anime convention dates. There is simply nothing more he could have done. They'd already made up their minds. Again, she didn't even look at him. They decided who he was before he ever stepped foot in the office.

That said, while we both mourn the loss of our short few days together in person, we will still be having the ceremony as planned... just... severely altered. I'll be standing across from Taka who will be on call on an ipad. This... is certainly not what we wanted, and I still have to break the news to my family who were very excited to meet the man I love. My grandmother who is up in age and has many physical ailments to the point she has expressed no intention to do anymore traveling has decided to make the trip anyway, but now I have to break it to her that she won't get to give my husband the hug she'd planned. This was her last big trip, and there will be no way to get her to Brazil in the future. But ultimately this changes nothing for us. This doesn't change our timeline, I'll still be heading to Brazil exactly as scheduled. I fell in love with a voice across the internet 5000 miles away and will keep loving him no matter the challenges life throws at us. Again, please watch what you say and do. You are welcome to be vocal about how upsetting this is, but we will not condone any violence, verbal or otherwise, to anyone involved in this situation. This is not a fight won with malicious intent, this is a battle that can only be fought with kindness, patience, and understanding, a willingness to sit down at the table with those you disagree with and calmly explain to them the situation and how it affects people. Perhaps that will amount to nothing, but hate begets hate, violence begets violence, and minds and opinions are not swayed by wrongs, only strengthened by them. So be kind where you can, and if you cannot, leave the task to someone who can be.
