Some of the contents: Woodspring Priory developed over several centuries and reached its greatest extent around 1530. We do not know what the earliest chapel looked like, but the surviving buildings contain fabric from the 13th-century onwards. Extensive archaeology helps us understand what the priory looked like at various phases in its development. This museum room is in part of the nave and the 'crossing under the tower. Both date from the 13th century. The main altar was in the chancel of the priory church, which extends beyoed the tower to the east. The 13th-century chancel was much larger than the nave but it seems it was destroyed by a disastrous fire in the 14th century. Today even its replacement has long since disppeared. The basic shell of the nave survives today though is much altered and had extra floors inserted when the site became a farmhouse. Woodspring Priory was at its richest and most developed around 1530, just before the Dissolution. The priory had recovered from the setbacks of fire and the Black Death in the 14th century, and had received generous endowments. Through the 15th century, it was redeveloped in the Perpendicular style. A north aisle was added to the nave. In 1536 work was still going on to build fine lodgings for the prior leading off the northwest corner. The adjacent west front, the main entrance to the church, was embellished with statues of saints and fine carvings. The tower was its current height. A gatehouse, perhaps doubling as a guest house, stood in front of the priory complex. A fine infirmary with its own chapel had been built at the southeast corner of the site, next to a refectory (or dining hall). The chancel, however, was now only about half the length of the original 13th-century one, destroyed earlier in a fire or other disaster.

The end of a few days at Woodspring Priory, Somerset. Of all the Landmark Trust properties that we’ve stayed at, few can match this former Augustinian Priory for grandeur. Significant portion of the church attached, as a ‘museum’, to the the spacious living quarters. A wind-swept, memorable weekend.
