While there are some big names attached to this, I remain highly skeptical of the project. Garlands movies have been extremely hit or miss for me - in the last few years very much the latter - and I just don't think he brings the needed finesse. That said most would go under handling Elden Ring.

"All what I’ve seen so far is dead on arrival. Slick and well made, but completely dead. It does not acquire the soul of poetry." -Werner Herzog on AI-generated film Photo of Werner Herzog looking contemplative next to a body of water
As for AI-generated film, Werner Herzog is unimpressed.

*puts finger to ear* I've just been told they slapped DRM on it, so you have to continue playing it on GOG. www.rockpapershotgun.com/original-res...
this new PR pivot of "we're using AI but only for technical things you dont understand" is really funny. why if in the areas i do understand it makes everything worse would i assume it improves anything in the areas that i don't understand
I believe there is still a solid chance for this to be bait but if Fujimoto really just ended Chainsaw Man out of nowhere - it kinda fits? Part 2 might be anything but coherent, though suddenly ending one of the most popular manga *is* the logical conclusion for endless shounen powercreep battles.
Played through the game three times now, got all achievements and a pretty good speedrun time. Still don't really like it, but I think it's fair to say I gave it enough chances. In conclusion: Grace's part is even better on insanity difficulty and should've been a whole game on it's own.
Can you believe the two best games of all time - according to user score - were released back-to-back just recently? Not even twelve month apart. Wow, what are the chances?!
At first I found myself wishing to finally play Leon. The three hour segment after arriving in Raccoon City was absolutely dreary though, felt like the worst parts of a 360-era military shooter. Why oh why didn’t they settle for one unified direction, one vision, while developing this?
Finished Resident Evil: Requiem to find myself disappointed - and shocked - critics ate this one up. It’s a fragmented mess, multiple ideas for Resident Evil games sewn together. The resulting reanimated corpse doesn’t even need a shotgun blast to the head because it’s falling apart on it’s own.
Of course you can't talk about this without mentioning the anime he directed a few years ago which maybe three people watched - also it sucked a bit.
I know they announced a sequel to Automata just recently, but it's hilarious that Square Enix underutilized Yoko Taro for a whole decade and now he's writing *Evangelion*
genuinely legendary resume. rest in peace o7
This is starting to get like universal basic income where every single objective study shows the same result but the people who don't like that result go "uh, well there's just really no way to know"
Maybe one of the few examples where the figuredhead really was the catalyst that made everything come together. Well, atleast Nagoshi is still developing these exact same games ...
Good lord, a few years ago this studio was basically beyond all criticism. One of gaming's sacred cows. *The* example how to produce titles faster AND cheaper. The last few years were mixed/poor and now this? How the mighty have fallen.

Great insights - sasuga. Also, enduring eight paragraphs before mentioning Miyuki Sawashiro?
No surprise whatsoever you picked it up, but I'm really looking forward reading your reviews while watching witchy journal weekly!

consider my feedback: i loved working at @larianstudios.com until AI. reconsider and change your direction, like, yesterday. show your employees some respect. they are world-class & do not need AI assistance to come up with amazing ideas.
If there's one thing you can say about Larian, it's that they listen to their audience. I really hope the backlash today demonstrates to them a love for what they do and how they have done it – and that it makes them reconsider this road they're going down with generative AI.
"[...] the CEO says the technology hasn’t led to big gains in efficiency" - it's always the same and if you "just" use AI for placeholder text and art in time this makes your product worse. Even creative people *will* get sloppy when they start using these tools. Everything's going down the drain.
Square Enix has definitely been mismanaged for years - constantly overestimating profits, closing and selling studios, firing good people and now relying mostly on AI for QA - but no one should listen to shareholders demanding exponential growth. They don't need even more business perspectives.
The original Let It Die was famous for its absolutely amazing soundtrack. Akira Yamaoka went and got in touch with a HUNDRED of his favourite indie bands and commissioned each to do a track named 'let it die'. The result was borderline mystical.
They're AI-generating the music here.
Fuck that.
I knew my favorite Final Fantasy wouldn't make the feminist cut - only one out of two women passes the bechdel test and the one who does is missing from the party for half the game - but seeing it at the very bottom is pretty disenchanting.
